Some of my first rides were along side the river beds in LA 18 years ago on a bmx. We used to ride from North Long Beach over to Belmont Shores and back.
Skateboarding killed bmx for me. No regrets there.
It was at some point in NC around '93 that I got so bored I jumped onto an old heavy Trek Antelope (this bike was left at our house by my brother's friend and never reclaimed). I rode this tank along the tobacco leafs of Eastern Wake Co. listening to pop punk on a cassette walkman. A school loan later allowed the purchase of a Mongoose MTB that came with a suspension fork. I then sought single track and for some reason, enjoyed the challenge of climbing over roots in granny gears.
I had this girlfriend of mine buy me a chopper cruiser bike that I later put a Nexus 7 on. It was because of this silly bike that I discovered Sheldon (RIP), BikeForums (alt. bike forum) and once again, the fun of just cruising around with the wind in your face. I had read about converting old road bikes to fixed but never thought of doing it myself - sounded crazy!! I then had a friend at work show up on a conversion w/ a suicide hub and I rode it in the parking lot only to declare it something I'd never get used to. I thanked my friend for allowing me to try out the 'phenomenon'. It was a while after I built up my second road bike that I considered that fixed thing again. Since I had an extra bike with semi horizontal dropouts, why not try it out again? That's history 'till now ~
I'm a heavy roller on a fixed in Five Points, Raleigh NC.
I'll get my MTB out to New Light or Beaver Dam on occasion too. I'm a fare weather commuter and maybe a couple more dips into the car free forum will inspire me to ride the nasty days too.
