Ok I'm ready to make the jump from platforms to clipless. problem is I'm having a tough time understanding what makes one pedal better than another. and the product reviews are so controversial with each other..

I was looking at some eggbeater c's but I'm not sure if I want to have to put on my MTB shoes (which I don't have yet so I'm looking at those to... I know the shoes are mostly personal preference.) on every time I want to ride my bike.

I was also looking at something like these:

Good thread, I'm looking at a new bike and am deathly afraid of these darm clipless pedals. I'm always afraid I'm going to fall and not be able to get out of them. I would like to know some good clipless pedals that are easy to get out of.

Get the 540's or maybe consider the 545's if you're looking for a platform combo type.

Don't get the 324's.

get the 540's. you dont really need a platform; all they do is add weight you dont need and dont look good.

Rotate your heel to the outside.

Shimano SPD has adjustable release tension so you can dial it way down until you get over your irrational fears.

I'll be racing soon, and I guess you can say I'm hard on bikes and parts, so maybe this'll help with a decision.
I've decided to quit being a pansy and just get full clip less, and not worry about the platform combo thing, its just added weight, more things to bash against rocks and roots, and mud catchers.
I'll just jog to the mailbox and back. Or, stop being so lazy and put the shoes on....

On some of the reviews, I've noticed people saying their egg beaters have broke, and that the bearings wear out and stuff... that doesn't appeal to me... I've had 2 seats fall off in the middle of the trail so far.... (thank god for my thomson elite...) At least I can still ride with no seat... pedal... is a different story.

540's seem pretty decent from what I've read,

I'm taking a wild guess that the shoe differences would be stuff like weight, colors, material, treads, and the such. Is there any special shoes for special stuff?

I use EggBeaters. For some reason, there seemed to be a lot of Crank Bros. haters in that thread. there are a lot of people who use Eggbeaters and LOVE them. Beside, if your pedal does blow up, rebuild kits are like $12.

What version do you have?
Most of the haters on MTBR seem to be targeting the chrome cheap ones.

Also, whats the correct pronunciation of "Shimano"
I've hear it like Shee-man-oh
Oh Shi-man-oh
GA has to many accents.
just so I don't walk into my LBS and get laughed at.

Back on topic, as I need new pedals... like NOW, I really am starting to hate platforms, kept slipping off when I crossed the creek. recent rains made it deeper than normal to... 1.5-2 feet of nice cold water

I mean, I put three times as many miles on my road bike then on the MTB.

But does that make up for the constant jars, bumps, jerks, hits, and grime of the trails?
IDK, I just want something that I can pay under 100 for and be able to ride worry free.
because I still have to get shoes along with it

I don't ride my rode bike like the Road Weenies do. I'd say I ride it closer to a 'cross bike. I encounter a lot of grime on my rides. I can't say the same about jumps and bumps, but the 2Ti and SL are similar. The 2Ti just has some Titanium parts on it, which do nothing for performance, only weight.

You're so witty Rankin. :D

Cheeto-

Instead of paying like $90 on the 540's, I would suggest getting a pair of 520's- very similar design for a lot less money, about $35-$45.

With respect to the original topic, I've been riding a pair of Time Atacs for about two years and have not had a single problem with them: http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/11572-240_TIMZP2-3-Parts-65-Pedals/Mountain/Time-ATAC-Z-Pedals.htm
They have the platform surrounding the clip-mechanism, which is good for short rides. They are, however, ridiculously slippery when riding with wet street shoes so be forewarned.

Also, because I know you're on a budget, if you haven't checked out http://www.qbike.com/ yet I would suggest it. Save a little bit of money here and there, right? Oh, and sage cycles has free shipping over $75.

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually used to ride with clipless and took a couple bad spills with them. I don't necessarily thinks it's an irrational fear....just a fear based on a piece of equipment I had bad experiences with but its been a few years since I last rode so I figured they had made some improvements.

No. High quality IMHO. As far as I'm concerned the only difference is weight. I've used Shimano pedals for 15years and have no complaints; had the 520's for the last 4 or 5 no problemo.

Eggbeater C's to be precise....they haven't let me down yet...clip right in and out everytime...plus the 4-sided entry really makes things easy...

Richely has cheap SPDs that I have always had good luck with. I found the cheaper $20 ones will rust are heavy and the retention spring will get worn out over time. I'd say for your first pedals don't go over $40/50.

People I've talked to have had problems with clogging on the frogs. I use spd's and not the frogs, so take it with a grain of salt.

Cheeto, didnt you just start riding? I think you should get more practice and experience with flats until you move to clipless. I rode for at least a year and when I got my first clipless set I fell hard three times in the first ten minutes. If you feel the need to buy something then get disc brakes or a good fork.

Get the m520s. Best performance you'll get for the price. I love eggbeaters, but started on spds and I think they are probably better to learn on, as you can adjust the release tension waaaay down. I've heard the really low end eggbeaters are prone to falling apart, so don't get the mxrs or whatever the cheap candy-style ones are called. My Cs, however, are holding up admirably after a winter of (ab)use.

think about where you ride... is it muddy? If so, Time Atac or Eggbeaters are the way to go - way less mud clogging.

You could look on e-bay for slightly used ones & save $$ that way.
