Hey guys, I forgot. It's daylight savings on Sunday which means we lose an hour. You want to roll at 8:00am?:(

Damn, should have kept my mouth shut ... :p would have been a pretty confusing ride start.

jpconrad
03-07-08, 06:20 PM
Not for me. :D

I had to consider it since I'm riding from home and a 7:30 roll time would have be starting before civil twilight.

Well then, let's roll at 8:00am so no one is in the dark, and Dave, who's driving up from San Diego, isn't completely wiped out.

Sure, thanks! I'm ok for an earlier time too; but yeah, 8am is good. :)

I'm in on this one too. I am going to start in Studio City and ride to the base of the mounatain and meet you guys there. What time do you think you guys will be at stop at the base of the hill?

Ok, so going Angeles Crest to Clear Creek, then taking Angeles Forest to Upper Big T to Angeles Crest to Wilson and back down is 55 miles.I'd also guess it's over 6000 feet of climbing over 55 miles? I'd suggest you revise the "intermediate" rating. Probably not an issue for the hardcore group on the list, but if someone decides to join and doesn't know what to expect, it would be ugly.

illy

Its not steep..just long, except at the base of the mountain

magicant
03-08-08, 04:55 PM
Well, based on the Happytime scale of ride difficulty, I guess it does still qualify as intermediate though it pushes the limit with the heavily loaded front end of climbing! As long as no one decides to join up unannounced, it's all good.

Have a great ride!

JP and I were discussing the ride this morning. And I hope this is okay with the most excellent ride organizer, but it is very likely that the ride will split into 2 groups.

I only mention this now, in case we have some people who are on the fence about joining because they are wondering about pace -- now you don't have to worry, just come join us!

We went up to Newcomb Ranch today and it was beautiful. Lots of snow along the road and the view of Baldy in the distance was great. I put my vest on for the descent, but could have done without it. It was windy, however, and it might get worse tomorrow, so be aware of that possibility.
A great ride with Vertical Bob, Christy, Sarah, Cathy, Renee, Laura, Andy, and Stan riding, and Keith drove up to Newcombs to ride around a little. Guess he wants to ride. Gene was up there, too.

It's looking good for me to make the ride - I would call it a "strong possibility". If all goes well, my wife Lisa will also join.
Looking forward to it!

If you don't mind another , I am thinking about joing this ride. I am just not feeling like doing Murietta tomorrow and really need to work more endurance. I have never been up in those hills and would love to ride in a group then by myself. My friend and I were going to ride up to Mill Creek summit for TOC but backed out due to the weather.

oh most importantly ..My name is John and I will be driving up from OC. If I am there I will be wearing my Simple Green Kit.

What is the temp like..I hate being cold.

It was windy is places up there today and supposed to be stronger tomorrow. I wouldn't recomend going over to the AF, BigT side. It's always blowing much harder over there. When we rode past Upper Big T you could hear it howling up that canyon. The AC side is much more sheltered and while the wind hits you at times it's much quieter over there. I'll try to get to Glenola Park in time to meet you on AC.

TRANSLATION: M.E. is coming and she climbs at the pace of a snail up a drain pipe, so you won't be the last one up the hill. :p

Groupetto and illy, you are more than welcome to join. This is turning into a great group! I don't know the temps, but I always layer as you can take off but you can't add.

Thanks, Big John and VB for the warnings about the wind! I wish you were both joining...hint, hint.

Joel, thanks for your input too, but stop acting like a pre-pubescent boy with boobs under your handle.

Last but not least, this is NOT AN EASY RIDE. But one can always turn around if need be and just go back as it is an out and back.

+1 on the winds. The top of Big T was blowing pretty strong today.

15 miles. Decent amount of climbing in that stretch, but broken up by a little descent and nothing steep.

merider1
03-08-08, 09:29 PM
I don't think we're going to Newcombs now anyway. Well, the caboose isn't. I'm going to Wilson and maybe AF if it isn't too windy.

I am considering this route as well. I have to make it back to OC to pick someone up and then back to LA later in the day.

Should be an Epic day.

Yes, it will be pretty if not windy up there. I haven't been up there since last year which is dreadful. I can't wait. :)

ME,
I know you didn't have the elevation marked but you know what is the approx.?
and Magicant mentioned about "the heavily loaded front end of climbing"..does he mean the steepness or/and duration of the climb?

I'm interested but would like to know my limitation.
Many thanks.

Gary, you could do this. You can hang with me, if you want. I won't lie to you...it's tough. But I'm still getting my groove back and I do NOT expect anyone to ride with me. You could climb it faster than I can, but if you're unsure for your first time up, you can stay with me (unless your pace is uncomfortable, in which case, you should go ahead).

I don't want to give anyone the impression that this is easy, but something that is nice about this ride is that anyone can go back down on his/her own (I've done it). The only thing I wouldn't want is anyone to go up to Wilson and back alone as there may be snow/ice on the road and given Grasshopper's recent incident (yes, I know, it wasn't on the toll road, but still!), for safety, I hope no one will go up that without company.

So, you decide.

Now, as far as Sally goes, I would not encourage her to come tomorrow (expected winds), but I'd gladly take her up it another time (she and I could hang). I think she'd dig it and with company, she'd make it up it. ;)

Many thanks. I think what he ment is all the climbing is in the first half of the ride. You go up ,turn around and go down;) From the bottom to Clearcreek its 5% Clearcreek to Red Box it 6-7% RB to Wilson 6% .Bottom to Wilson about 20 miles
