Commuting - Bicycling competitively - where to start?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

If I wanted to participate in cycling competitions where would I begin? That is to say as far as training and signing up for a competition? I don't have the first clue. I am in Florida and would like to start with a competition that is easy to sign up for and has a large field a la New York Marathon style.
I also wanted to know if anyone here has crossed over into other physical activities. I have been debating for a long time getting into kayaking, boxing, windsurfing or surfing. At the moment I am most interested in wind surfing.
Local bike clubs are a good starting point.
Ask at the local bike shop.

Start posting in the Road forum (or Mtn Bike if that's where your interest lies).
Commuting can be a great way to train for races, especially if your commute involves a variety of terrain and weather conditions (i.e. wind), and especially if you can vary your route a bit now and then to take in different terrain and weather conditions.
As for other sports, in addition to cycling, I also cross country ski, snowshoe, walk, hike, weightlift, and occasionally take a yoga class.
