Chuck Bramwell leads this century:

Saturday, March 8, 7:30 A.M.
96 Miles with 7,400 Feet of Climbing without the Ski Lift Option
106 Miles with 9,400 Feet of Climbing with Ski Lift Option
Rain Cancels

Well, we now know how wrong the weather man can be!! So let’s try the mountain again this Saturday from a little different angle. There’s only 7 weeks to the Mulholland Challenge so it’s time to get our climbing legs kicked into shape!!

This Century is not recommended for first time century riders ... it's got 7,400 Feet of Climbing.

The Elevation Profile with Climb Analyses, Photos, and Routes Sheets are at

http://www.caltriplecrown.com/centuries/mountbaldy.htm
Weather.com is forecasting Mount Baldy to be Partly Cloudy with temps of 38-61 and a 10% chance of rain on Saturday at

http://www.weather.com/outlook/recreation/outdoors/tenday/USCA0737?from=36hr_topnav_outdoors

so it will be cool up there!! I’d recommend bringing at least a vest, arm warmers, and knee warmers along with your Camelbak.

We will start at the Carl's Junior at Imperial Highway and La Palma. We'll quickly hook up with the Carbon Canyon Century route then head North to the base of the great Glendora Mountain Road where there will be few or no cars as we climb up and follow Glendora Ridge Road to Mt. Baldy. The Ski Lifts are an option but note that this options adds 2,013 Feet in 4.6 Miles for an Average Gradient of 8.3% with many sections of over 18%!! We'll then take the screamer downhill back down to Foothill and return down Brea Canyon and weave our way back to the start on the same roads we came out on.

This ride will start at Carl's Junior, 5701 E. La Palma Ave., Anaheim, CA 92807-2229 at Imperial Highway and La Palma (TBM 770-E1). We will start at 7:30 A.M. sharp so you should arrive by 7:15 A.M. Take the Imperial Highway exit from the Riverside (91) Freeway and turn North on Imperial Highway (90) to La Palma Ave. Make a Right on La Palma then a quick Left into the parking lot next to the Carl's Junior.

You should bring your riding buddy along with you so you can stick together. We will stop at the Regroup points only for a few minutes.

See you Saturday!!

Do you think this will consist mainly/only of faster riders; or will the speeds may be spread out with slower ones as well?

There are usually 2 groups, one slow, one fast. We stay together till Carbon Canyon then the fast group usually takes off.

Call me crazy (some might say stupid) but if you want to train for the MC why not just ride it? I understand training for a ride like EC due to its location but the SM's are right here. You can just ride the course all you want whenever right???

I love the SM's but I can't ride to them from my front door. Plus last year I was faster on the MC than most who train often in the SM's and I only ride there once a year.

For WCD, I guess the starting location at Anaheim is close to his home?

For me in San Diego, Anaheim is 1.5 hrs drive vs SM's 3 hrs. For the drive home, it won't have the traffic hit through LA core as well.

Yes the starting point is 7.5 miles from my front door. With the ski lift option I will end up with 10K in 120 miles.

Makes sense to me, doing just that the 15th with at least felt1. All info further back. But I do like the idea of this ride. Rode GMR and on to the Village for the first time this past Sunday. If I wasn't riding Solvang I'd jump on.

Sorry to hear that Vance, I was looking foward to riding with you since we didn't get much time to chat during the Baker RR.

I updated the OP to include the "registered" riders but as always there will be more who show up the morning of. This ride usually draws a crowd.

It seems like a great ride. I want to try claremont to 39 and around, and then do claremont to GMR and around. It should be about a century.

Oh.

I'm out, btw. Have fun!

OK I canceled my ride(because yours sounds better). I'm going to leave from Corona and possibly meet you guys at the last rest stop(McD's) before you head up GMR. If I see a group I will introduce myself if not I will most likely see you on the hill at some point.

You ride from Corona? Curious, what way do you go? Couldn't you meet us at the first stop (McD's on Chino Hills Pkwy)?

I'll take Limonite to Archibald to Riverside to Euclid to Foothill. I know a lot of people meet at the Starbucks on Lone Hill. But yes, I could also meet at that McDs in Chino Hills because Kimball ave. goes through to Chino Hills now, so with a quick climb over Soquel Canyon and over to CH pkwy I can be there.

Dang, that's a stretch, I don't like riding on Euclid. I take Mountain if I'm going to Baldy, it's a little better.

It would be cool if you meet us in Chino Hills because the roads we take are nicer than your route. If you meet us at the McD's on Foothill, last time I got there at 10am. We usually regroup there and it takes 30 min or so.

I didn't do hills and long ride for sometimes so I am very intrested but reading the following concern me a bit
You should bring your riding buddy along with you so you can stick together. We will stop at the Regroup points only for a few minutes.
The group of people you listed in blue at the top of the topic, are they all 'your group' and super strong?

No, those are the people who emailed to "preregister" for this ride. The only guy in that group who is "super strong" is Dan Hoopes, Cat2 racer. But most of the guys are Double riders so you should feel at home. "My group" usually shows up unannounced, like Bob Davidson, 50+ KOM 2nd place 06 and 07 (http://www.planetultra.com/KOM/index.html). He is 61 now and still kills me.

You should come, you stong guy.:D

I am at about 85% yes on coming.
The only issue is that I will need to wakeup at 5:50 and leave at 6:15 in order to be at 7:15 in the starting point.
I am so used to wakeup at 7:00AM + that this is actually the only slow down.
I didn't do anything longer than 50 in Feb so I am definetly due for a century in March and I like Baldy alot.
If nothing comeup in my local group (i.e SFVBC) that is long and attrackive, I will wake up and drive.

Weather report showing wind. I hope it's not like last week.

WhiteCarbonDude
03-07-08, 04:52 PM
Glendora
Tomorrow: Partly cloudy skies. High near 75F. Winds WSW at 5 to 10 mph.

The winds should be fine. There is usually a head wind coming home but it's mostly down hill.

WhiteCarbonDude

I added some more people to the list.

Just a quick note from Chuck:
Weather.com is forecasting a high of only 57 for Mount Baldy tomorrow at

http://www.weather.com/outlook/recreation/outdoors/hourbyhour/USCA0737?begHour=5&begDay=68 (http://www.weather.com/outlook/recreation/outdoors/hourbyhour/USCA0737?begHour=5&begDay=68)

so I’m bringing the full load of clothes and my Camelbak to load them in if it warms up. There’s no sense in freezing to death up there. J

Winds NNE at 15 to 25 mph. Stronger winds in and below canyons and passes

I hope it doesn't blow too hard up on Ridge Road.

I'm the first one back? Sissies. Just kidding i cheated and went home on Baldy rd. Knocked about 25miles off. Thanks for the ride WCD and thanks for hanging back and chatting it up with me too when I know you wanted to go a little faster. Nice meeting you too shprung. You guys have forced my hand into starting a training regiment instead of just riding around.

took me 1:40 driving back home! - this was the sad part of the day.
It is lovely to have my Century in for the month, and this was't an easy one. But we all pussies - no one continue to the ski lifts. I took few photos and will upload later.
After the first 55 miles which are with 7,000ft the ride back (which is mostly down hill) was like a recovery ride.
The group was very interesting with RAAM rider, 16 doubles in 2007 rider, CAT2, and many more that can do a double any day of the week (I will include WhiteCarbonDude in this group)
The weather was excelent and to top it, Almost no motorcycles nor many other cyclist today (few eye candy girls as an add on but no Brandy?!)
While only 3 BFers, I talk about BF with others and maybe some will come to visit or even start posting...
Good day to comeback and take the heart to its max HR.

Burritos from Carls Jr? Ewwwww.

It hard to see from the photo how big this one was. It was the 1 pound burrito; it was so fat and heavy that whiteCarbonDude took a photo on my first bite becasue 40 sec later it was all done. The ride had no real food stop until that point (which was like 75 miles into the ride after goin up and down baldy)

You had to be much earlier to see Brandy, a little after 8ish. I saw a bunch of you on the way back from the village, I remember seeing the Veloce Santiago jersey on the front side of GMR a little after 11. My friend and I left from the bottom of GMR around 7:45 for an up and back, what a nice day for a ride.

I'll see you Saturday!!:D On training if your ever able to be down in Irvine Tues or Thurs at 5:30, Tues is flat interval training near the airport (a fantastic supportive group) and Thursday is uphill intervals/repeats at Turtle Rock. I've done the flats but not the hill training yet. But my new schedule started this week and I'll be unsure of myself but I'll be there.:eek:.
