OK, so Brett Favre is retiring today...huge story here. Turns out it works to my benefit because the Packers are holding a news conference about it today starting at 3:00, the exact time my radio show starts.

This means that while we air that live, I should have time to run down the street from the station with recorder in hand (perhaps a camera and a Sharpie as well) to the Lance Armstrong news conference slated for 2:30.

Only problem is that these things are never on time...could be tricky for me.
Lose job just to be able to meet Lance in person? Hmmmm.....

Here's the deal if anyone local wants to try....

Oak Crest Tavern
(Capitol and Oakland)

LA, the gov and mayor expected to arrive around 2:00, with a 2:30 event planned inside.

So how many more times is the retirement of Favre going to happen? This dude must be the most retired pro sports player, EVER! Michael Jordan got nothing on Favre.

Well, to his credit, Favre never let his retirements get in the way of actually playing the game. 827 consecutive starts, if I'm not mistaken. Jordan went away for real. Came back. Went away for real (no foolin'!) a second time. Unfortunately came back again. Retired for good (maybe).

Everyone knows botto's not real. Expect Favre back under center.

And classy move having the press conference at a tavern. Yeah, yeah, I know it's about a smoke free restaurant/bar thing, but I applaud them for actually having the conference at a tavern. I think they should all do shots before the questions start flying.

I'm in!
This is crazy...my one chance....and I'm giddy like a schoolgirl!

You know what'll happen.
I'll get there in an hour to be told, "Ah, they're hung up in Madison...they're running about an hour late."
In in a puff of smoke, there goes my window of opportunity...Hip walks dejectedly out of the tavern and heads back to the radio station to somehow, someway attempt to carry on on the air despite the black hole left in his soul.

I hope it works out for you. Pictures or it didn't happen, you know.

Good luck and don't touch Lance in any inappropriate way. That's just not good for clean family radio business.

I have a camera in my bag...we'll see.

I fear looking like Farley in the SNL McCartney skit...

"Uhm, Lance....remember that time you were in the Tour de France? That was awesome...."

Make sure you wear your FdJ jacket and QuickStep bibs for serious roadie cred.

You'll have Lance interviewing you by the time it's all done.

Well, it was very quick and a bit disappointing.....but I squeezed it in.

They were late of course, and I had to get back to the station to do the show! They announced ahead of time that there would be no media avail before or after the event, meaning no one-on-one interviews.

So much for that. They also announced there would be no autographs. So much for that. In fact, there was a cyclist there next to me as Lance and the Gov walked in. They had the walkway blocked, and the agents and security lined the way in. Some guy with a badge told the cyclist clutching a pen and a Lance book that the guy would be tazed and arrested if he tried to get an autograph! Yikes. Get over yourselves.

I wasn't there when Lance left...I had to leave during his speech so I don't know if anyone tried as he left.

So, the bottom line was I got to see Lance in person for the first time at least, and I was glad I was there for at least that much.

Here he is coming into the tavern with the governor.

My first impression of Lance in person...short...short and chiseled. Man he looks good, like he could kick some butt on a bike to this day.

A couple of shots while talking with the mayor in the background. At least I got an exclusive with him earlier because he got there early and without the entourage.

...and one more...tough to get a pix..lots of media there.

Funny, as I said on the show later...my headline on the day:

"Armstrong picks worst possible day to visit Wisconsin for his cause"....I wonder how much coverage any of this will receive on the day Brett retires.

Hip, I caught some of WTMJ's wall-to-wall Brett Favre circle jerk yesterday and it was kind of funny hearing you attempt to shoehorn Lance into the conversation. Thank goodness you got the Lance soundbite where he mentions Favre, or you'd have gone berzerk.

And, really, is 'dark currant' a color that stands out on the roads? (see, I listen to the ads sometimes, too! ;) )

Sweet.
Glad you caught it.
Yeah, by God those sound bites were making it onto the show after all the chasing I did yesterday.

And yes, dark currant is a pretty cool color. See a pix on my cianciola site. Nice family vehicle. Not for me, but nice.

Wow ... thanks for the report. I wish I hadn't forgotten about this ... I was available ... but went chasing for snow to ski on instead (doh!) I would have shot a gigabyte of photos to just get a glimpse of him.

Oh well.
