What are the views out there about "executive wellness centers." The one I hear advertising a lot near me is Princeton Longevity Center www.theplc.net

They're costly and I've heard that they overdiagnose, e.g., treating issues that are unlikely to lead to real health problems as conditions. On the other hand, I also do not have any faith that the standard physical from one's internist/general pratitioner is all that it ought to be.

It depends on your perspective.

From a cost efficiency concern, they aren't very effective - the number of issues that they come up with aren't worth the cost. My physical today covered blood (including PSA), urine, chest xray, height, weight, multi-lead EKG, and I did the colonoscopy thing last summer. Included with a good interview to assess other risk factors.

What other tests do you think a healthy 43-year-old athlete who eats a good diet needs? I don't need to be tested for things like metabolic syndrome, malaria, or most of the other things that executive physicals test. And I'd rather skip the radiation from the full-body scan, thank you.

If you're in good health... why bother? Reminds me of those coupons the car repair shops send out - $20 for a full diagnostic! We all know they'll find _something_ that needs fixin, and who are we to argue with the expert.

If you do go, just get second and 3rd opinions (and check insurance) before you do anything.
