Bicycle Mechanics - Avids are killing my ears, and its been a full season of break in time!

I know this topic has been beaten to death, but I have to figure it out. I able to tollerate my sqeeky avid disc brakes when Im riding trails on my own, but riding with others around, it pisses me off. The longer the ride, the increase in the noise level. Ive cleaned the rotors, I even have a second set of wheels with a set of off brand set of rotors and the same thing. Do I need to change the pads, could they be worn out? Its not pad adjustment, Im now a pro at the adjustment. What the hell!

Sand the pads down slightly and sand the shine off of the rotor.

New pads might be an option. Get some EBC Golds if you decide on replacing them.

could be the rotors. but my squeaking went away after just one ride... could also be pad alignment. you don't really want the outer caliper to push the rotor a great distance before it contacts the inner caliper. also try playing with the spacers on the mounting bolts. my rear squeaked when my calipers were too far from my rotor. i got the 165mm adapter but my rotor was 160mm. i rearranged the spacers/adapter so that the pads have more contact with the rotor and no more squeaking.

V-Brakes are a waste.
Right... and for a good 15-20 years, all mountain bikers died because they couldn't stop themselves with their cantilever rim brakes.

I have a friend with an 18 pound Steel single speed running Paul Canti's. They work better, and are lighter, than any V-brake on the market.

When you are riding in the mud and wet and grit and grime, have fun with your V-brakes. I simply enjoy stopping instead of death gripping my levers, praying that I can stop.

I stand behind my comment that V-Brakes are inferior to Disc brakes in EVERY situation except for weight. And there are several brakes out there that are approaching V-brake weight.

Well, I did the sanding trick and it worked on these sqeeky *******s. However, it did give a gritty sound against the rotor for a while, but I didnt notice any damage to the rotors. Another thing I noticed, I pulled the front pads out and noticed a lot of front pad wear. I didnt think the avids could toe in or out, just straight on. Why would one half of the pad be totally worn down, and the bad end be in fine shape?

i like U-brakes.

misalignment of the caliper.

Unbolt the caliper (loosen) clamp the brake. Wiggle the caliper.

Keeping the brake clamped, tighten down the bolts. Adjust the pad's from there.
