My room mate had family down from Canada for a week and a half. Between the rain, starting a new company and entertaining I didn't ride, but I did eat - a LOT!
So, I go for a follow up to the Dr's and I gained 6 pounds in one week! Is that possible! YEP!
So, back on the diet (not really a diet, but healthy eating) and back on the bike!!!!!!
I am shocked to say the least!

No need to get the rest of us feeling sorry for you. A couple of weeks with no riding and a weight gain of 6lbs. That is not unusual and there is only one person to blame.
Now I have to admit that I do certain long rides and for those I carbo-load. Plenty of Potatoes- Bread- Rice- Pasta and the best bit of all- The sticky buns and Pie. I have put on as much as 7lbs in preparation for a big ride and it has been needed.
Only one thing for it now- All that Weight gain and it has to be worked off. You have 4 days to get the butt in tune for your first 100 miler of the year- You've done the hard bit of the carbo loading so no whimping out- because the following weekend will be the double century on consecutive days.
We'll have you down to 140lbs before the summer comes.

I've got a friend who, after bicycling RAGBRAI, was proud because she had gained only 5 pounds.

:eek:I'm the cook!
Let's see it all started with a wonderful Prime Rib - 5.75 pounds cooked medium rare in rock salt. 12 minutes per pound. Baked potatoes and vegetables with a Balsamic Glaze.
Followed by Thai Namsod. Then ...............
I think you get the picture. It's my own bloody fault. (Sorry for using such strong words Stapfam.)

Whoa there! You're overlooking a very positive outcome that comes from overeating. Why, it actually increases your desire to ride the bike! Think of all the new rides you're going to get to do to melt away those pounds!
Overeating is an incentive! :D

If it's the latter . . . you are really tough! I haven't done those since training for, and then riding, P-B-P back in '91! Makes for a long weekend though :).

Long enough- but Offroad- in the MUD and on a Tandem- mean a long ride- normally takes us about 12 hours. Report on the 2006 ride below where we failed.

The "proper diet" and no exercise is a great way to gain weight!
I can tell everyone from experience that it is a LOT easier to gain weight than it is to take it off!!!
Eat it ALL and then exercise/ride properly.

UPDATE YIKES!
Went to the Dr today for a follow up to the brain spots. Weight down slightly. Dr. inquired as to what I was going to do to get 30 to 45 minutes of cardio exercise everyday. Easy I said - I'll ride my bike and get myself back in shape!!
She absolutely exploded. "What ride a bicycle outdoors? Are you crazy?" "You are not going to ride a bicycle outdoors. You are not! You are not! You are going to get a treadmill or a stationary bicycle and ride indoors." "It is not safe to exercise outdoors." "You'll get hit by car or have a wreck."
Whooooooa Doc! Good thing I didn't tell her about my mtn bike crash! She's my doctor and not my Momma! I am going to be posting my vitals in a new thread for all to see and then you can hold me accountable to riding my bike a minimum of 20 miles per day - Monday through Friday with a good four hours plus on Saturday.
Stapfam - You have my permission to reach across that great expanse and kick my Yank rear end! PLEASE!
Goal
Loose 30 lbs
Significantly Lower my BMI
Drop to a 34" Waist (I was there when I came back to California from Tennessee in August)
Lower the Cholesterol (I'm in the shallow end of the gene pool when it comes to this one.)

Time to find another doctor??
The only thing my doctor ever said about my biking was that is probably wasn't the safest form of exercise for someone with osteopenia and to be careful on the bike. He also said it probably was the biggest reason I don't have any problems except the slightly brittle bones.

You speak of brain lesions and brain spots. If you're dealing with anything similiar
to M.S. there can be balance issues, vision issues, etc. ...and they can come on
very quickly. Is she concerned because she's afraid of risk in general, or due to
your particular situation? Be careful, please.

As the rider is a bit overweight- Make it metrics.
Last time I did 120 miles on consecutive days was way back in 98. Total of 400 miles in 4 days But that was offroad and I do not wish to do it again. Took me 4 months to train for it and a full month to recover.
BUT- Distance riding on consecutive days can be done----Look at Will.
Now a warning to Thomas- Moderation. Take it easy on the eating and until you get the legs and lungs back- Take it steady on the riding. And make the centry a metric first of all. The double century may take a bit of training for.

Full disclosure (at least in a limited space):
After three Dr appointments and sharing MRI reports two years apart I left the Dr's scratching their heads.
This included evaluations from the University of California Irvine Medical School and Hoag Hospital Epilepsy Center, both of which concluded that they do not believe that the lesions are related to MS, Parkinsons or may cause epilepsy. There are questions as why a lesion contributed to a Right Frontal Lobe Stroke - small one, but hey. So, that's good news. One Internist asked: "Did they tell you they were cancer?" NOPE! Don't think we would be sitting here talking about it after all of this time if it was. So the question remains as to the nature and cause.
So, it is up in the air. I'm sure that they have concerns. Right after my diagnosis I got back in shape, started rock climbing again - 5.10 Sport and 5.10 Trad; Alpine Climbing, back country skiing, snow shoeing and mountain biking.
I live one day at a time and enjoy every moment. Why - Faith!
Live Like You Were Dying ~ Tim McGraw
Sky diving, I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named 'Fu Manchu'
and then I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter
and I watched an eagle as it was flying
and he said someday I hope you get the chance
to live like you were dying.
I know where I'm going, just don't know how I'm going to get there!
Interestingly, I used to be extremely embarrassed about having a "medical problem" and was loath to discuss it with anyone let alone myself. Afraid how others would treat me as I am not a victim. I have since found, not seeking sympathy, but just accepting what it is and deciding to soldier on regardless. My best friend had a stroke and was very embarrassed at his inability to walk and do other things like "normal people", as if any of us are "normal". Thank goodness that has changed for John and in the process I learned to accept my own problems. Mine are not visible and I am now far more sensitive to others issues whether they be physical, mental or emotional. Funny how adversity can be such a great teacher.
Thank you all for your concern, interest and continued posts.
I appreciate the banter, friendships and the shear fact that there isn't one person on the 50+ thread that is not an exception to our non active peers. I will go as far to say that there are fewer poseurs, less testosterone (no offense ladies) and a greater sense of community than is found on any other thread at BF.

Does it give you headaches? My brother has a strange lesion in his frontal lobe that gives him bad cluster headaches. They don't know exactly what that one is, either.
I, on the other hand, have some kind of "brain scar" that caused seizures for several years after it happened. Seizures are a bummer because you can't drive...

Minor headaches, primarily when looking at DG's bicycle rack.
Fortunately no seizures. Seizure medication will and can kill you - they gave it to me as a "precaution". What they failed to tell me was the "Extreme Potential for Serious Side Effects" - autoimmune syndrome ultimately leading to death - thank goodness they caught it early. It must have been the large red whelps all over my body! Thank goodness for a good Primary Care Doc! Never again.
Solveg, I asked my Neurologist at the time for a prescription for a Kilt. KILT - you mean like a dress she says. No, a Kilt. Why would you want a kilt. Well, I figure if I air things out this stuff won't kill me. She informed me that I would never see a prescription for a kilt on her prescription pad. My primary care physician gave me one with complete instructions on how to wear it for best effect. I showed it to her, picked up my records and immediately changed Neurologist.
PS; The kilt didn't help much, but it got a lot of attention!
:D
I think a kilt is a wonderful prescription, for whatever ails ye!

Sorry to hear of your health issues but glad to hear you're feeling
and doing well. MS came to my mind because my wife suffers from it
and she has lesions throughout her brain. Thank goodness for Copaxone.
We learn more from the medical community about these autoimmune
diseases almost monthly now.
