Got my replacement 705 today, altimiter works fine now. Hopefully all the other functions will be good on this unit too. I'll update after i get some time in the saddle with the new one.

From what I can tell they hard programed the ETA to use 12MPH +/- when in bicycle routing mode. The unit should use average speed or something similar. Many of us have asked Garmin to change it. To do this use Garmin support feature on their website. If enough people ask maybe it will be part of a future update.

Rofl. What a monumentally stupid way to program a device.
This is a great thread for 705 knowledge, but it's getting a bit long to wade through to pick out the gems. Does anyone have a web site that summarizes all of the 3rd-party software and web sites that can be used in conjunction with the 705 for workout recording, mapping, and routing? I am getting lost in the Training Center vs. Motionbased vs. Garmin Connect vs. SportTracks discussions.
I have a 705 with the City Navigator card in it and would like to know what online or downloadable software is available mainly to be able to do routing on my PC and get it into the 705 in a format where it will work with the CN maps and 705 routing features, or maybe even load some alternate maps onto a removable card or into the unit's memory. My questions are mainly:
Can I use Mapsource do create a route, even though I don't have CN on my PC (I do have some other Garmin maps)?
Can I use my Delorme products such as Topo 7 or Street Atlas somehow?
One nice thing about the Delorme products is that I can define new roads & trails, such as the rail-trails that we have in the area. But of course there's no way to get that into the 705 that I know of.

There's a lot of good information on the Motion Based forum for the 605/705 (http://forums.motionbased.com/smf/index.php?board=86.0), as well.

Do you have to purchase the speed/cadence sensor to get the speed or does the gps calculate it? Also how does the unit do in the rain? Sorry is these questions have been asked before but I didnt want to read through 19 pages of posts.

Calculates speed just fine without the sensor. Sensor just gives it a second source of data for speed (e.g., letting you calculate speed when the GPS is unavailable). Get the sensor if you want cadence data. Also, the sensor is the same one as the 205/305 (GSC10).
Rain- no problem. I've been caught out in the rain a few times and haven't had any problems. I've also dripped sweat all over the thing on a regular basis without issue. Seems pretty waterproof.

Anyone know the most simple, foolproof way to create a digital cue sheet online for this thing? With turn by turn direction prompts and either rerouting to get back on course or at least realize when you've gotten back on course. I've heard:
bikeroutetoaster -> use course points -> check add course points at junctions -> save as tcx file
I've just had so many random problems w/ mapmyride, mapsource (the app), etc. and GPX files. Anybody have a suggestion or comment on the above?

As for online tools I like BikeRouteToaster.com as it gives you the option of downloading routes or courses and will give you cue sheets.
You can use Mapsource to create routes (AKA GPX files) and download them to the GPX folder on your Edge.
I cannot speak to Delorme maps as I do not use them and never have. I would guess that it would work if you are able to create GPX file from it.

I have had the best luck with BikeRouteToaster.com. With BikeRouteToaster you can also set to warn you ahead of time for turns instead of warning you once you are AT the turn. It also produces a digital cue sheet that you can print out. A TCX file will warn you when you get off the course. It leaves it up to you to get back but it is not that hard to figure out. The latest software version for the Edge also includes a digital cue sheet for all course points that are in the course.
There is a manual way to create a BRT type TCX file if you have MapSource and dont mind passing your file through multiple shareware programs but it you have access to BRT you may as well use it.
Hope that helps.

i just used mapsource and it will reroute me the shortest way back onto the route i had planned. i guess the trick is that i put waypoints at ever turn. the only down side is it will sometimes route you back to a waypoint that you missed if you go off course. then all you need to do is just restart the saved ride and it will pick up where ever you are.

When you say you only bought the disk with maps I assume you mean Micro SD card.
You can download MapSource without maps for free from Garmins website. There is also a way to copy your SD card to your computer if you use a PC so you at least have a base map installed.
I was just cleaning out a very messy box in a drawer where I keep all sorts of cables and electronic junk: USB cables, adapters, chargers, etc. When I was putting everything back, I was surprised to find that I had two Garmin chargers with mini-USB plugs on them. One is definitely for my 705, and the other must have come with my Forerunner 305 (I usually charge from the PC's USB cable, but it's nice to have these other ones for on the road).
Anyway, I'm not entirely certain which is which, or if they're safely interchangeable. One is a vertical-style brick and is labeled "5V - .35A"; the other goes more horizontally (parallel with the prongs) when plugged in and is labeled "5V - 1A".
I assume that the 1-amp charger is for the 705 -- correct?

I am at work and cannot look at my charger but according to Garmins website the part # for the Edge version is 010-10723-00. The Forerunner version shows an AC unit w/ a USB jack. They may have changed it since you purchased yours. They do not list the volts or amps for either.

I was not able to use the 'delete all' function, since I did not have that option. I was able to delete each waypoint individually; time consuming, but it worked. Also, I tried to download MapSource from the Garmin website; no joy. I needed to have a MapSource product to be able to do so, and I don't. Nothing is free, apparently.

Mine did this several months back. It turned out to be a dead battery in the speed/cadencen sensor. If you are running a sensor try turning it off in the Edge accessories menu. If the problem goes away then the source of the problem is your sensor.

I've been using a shareware utility called Sport Tracks (http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/) which I've been liking. But my husband has Garmin Connect on his computer and we decided to try that. Do others use and like it? Unless I'm missing something it seems very limited. I can only import ALL or one at at time. Is there a way to import the last week's rides all at once (ie: ctrl click to select multiple)? it doesn't seem to do that. AND, again, maybe I'm just blind, but I'm not seeing any way to label rides at all except in notes. In Sport Track it's easy to organize rides and search them by location, etc.
So I'm wondering if there are any advantages to using Garmin Connect and if I'm missing the features asked about above. AND, I'm wondering what other tools are favored. OH yeah...I also tried uploading to Motionbased. That was HORRIBLY slow and as far as I can tell the only advantage to that is if you want to share your rides with the world, right?
The one thing I'm frustrated by is that the elevation gain displayed at the end of a ride is NEVER the same when I upload the ride to either Garmin Connect or Sport Track. I don't know what to believe or how to make them match up.
Thanks for your input.

I use Garmins software (training center) and sports tracks, and garmin connect. Now as to the benefits, I'll list them below-
Sports tracks-
Great part by part ride analysis, and great numbers in this software, also highly customiseable.
Good tracking of miles, and great plugins for everything from power to weather.
Garmin Connect-
It's web based, so I don't have to worry about the database
I like the Goal features
It keeps rides in categories that make sense to me (Road bike, transportation) ETC. I like being able to view my total miles by the TYPE of ride OR the TYPE of bike, or both.
It's going to get better, so the data will at some point be more useable.
Garmin Training Center-
I'm kind of used to it, and it provides a quick look at my miles totals for the year. Not a whole lot else to say about this one.
In short you'll find it only takes a few extra seconds to get all your data to all three places, and then you can view whichever suits your needs best based on what you want to see.
Good luck!

My 705 has started to Autopause/Autoresume in rapid succession
Mine did this after I rode across a cattle guard which caused the sensor to rotate away from the speed sensor. I moved it back and taped it in place. No problem since.
The early ads I saw for the Edge (or maybe it was on the box) said something about being able to exchange data (courses? routes?) between one 705 and another. Is this possible? If so, where is this functionality hidden?
It would really be nice for an organized event to be able to provide a way to essentially download the "route sheet" right into your Edge. I did this using Mapsource for an event where I had the route info the day before, and it made it a lot easier to stay on course.

To do this from one Edge to another:

Has anyone successfully mapped out a route and uploaded to 705? I'm able to reride previous routes, but not create any using Veloroutes. I thought I had it figured out a couple pages back, but epic fail when I tried to use it. Here's the issue:
I created a route (http://veloroutes.org/bikemaps/?route=21524) of this weekend's ride including a bunch of turns that I'm sure I'll forget.
1) When I upload the gpx file into Garmin/GPX, it says I exceeded the 100 waypoint limitation. I wouldn't need a GPS for rides < 100 waypoints generally, but whatever. Let's go to option 2.
2) When I upload a TCX into Garmin/Courses, my 705 completely shuts down if I try to navigate. I can't edit, view, navigate, or do anything except delete it. Complete power shutdown. Awesome.
I like the simplicity of Veloroutes, but if anyone actually has a method that works, let me know. Do I need multiple pieces of software to get mapsource to work? I've read a bunch of posts that left me confused (need base software + "mapsource product" + conversion tool?). It seems like a simple task for a GPS unit, but I'll be carrying a map, afterall.
Edit: Course will work if I load it to the SD card instead of the device's flash memory. No turn by turn indicators?? Uhhhh...

The 100 waypoint limit is an issue with routes. Personally prefer courses as they will not reroute you if you do go off course.
I have had good luck using BikeRouteToaster.com to create courses. It will also allow you put turn warnings in the file automatically so that you will get a beep warning, granted it is not the same type of warning you get with a route but it does work.

There is a bug is the 2.4 version that on occasion does not complete one or more of the files in the xml TCX file. This will prevent Garmin Training Center from loading the file. I had a similar problem with Veloroutes when I tried to download the route for the 206-mile Seattle to Portland ride. I subsequently found someone had created the same route on MapMyRide.com and it downloaded to my Garmin's GPX folder with no problems and it is very simple to use. Just create or find the route you want. Save it if it is new, then hook up your Garmin and re-save it as a GPX or CRS file, both work.

I thought perhaps this might have been answered earlier in this thread, but if so I could not find it.
I live at sea level but I rode at 3,000 to 6,000 feet for a week in NE Oregon a week ago. Now I am back at sea level but the altitude on the 705 continues to read 2,700 feet, even after three rides.
Is there a trick to getting it to recognize the correct altitude? My Garmin GPSMap76, which does not have a barometric altimeter and just uses the GPS fixes for altitude, never has this problem, so I can't figure out why the 705 won't adjust after three days at sea level.

I had the exact same problem. They didn't reply to my request for help... which might be a good sign (that they hope the problem will be fixed faster than they could reply). I did a full reset of the device by holding on and mode together when turning the device on. I was prompted if I was sure I wanted to reset the device. After a reset, I had to redo some, but not all, of the data in the machine, but the altitude was more reasonable. I recommend starting up the device for the first time outdoors with clear view of the sky for satilite signal strength.
The reason that the 705 has this problem is that it is designed to be far more accurate in measuring change in altitude than a map based altitude could possibly be.

Once I connect to the PC, it saves all history.
