OK on a lighter note..... this may have been discussed months ago but, can I easily move a 605 from bike to bike with 700c wheels? tubulars, x25, x28 and x32 clinchers? does it need ot be recalibrated for each bike? I have a feeling the sales person at best buy will not be able to answer this question.
IIRC the 605 doesn't even have a wheel sensor, so you are always going to be going off the satellites. The wheel/tire size doesn't enter into the equation.

I just had a thought. I did use a belkin mini-b usb cable to re-charge the edge 705 while I was out of town travelling a few weeks ago, because I didn't have my OEM garmin cable. Since I wasn't trying to upload or download, and just wanted to get a charge on it, I didn't think the non garmin usb cable mattered. Anyone ever hear of using a non garmin oem cable causing the edge drive to scramble? Just a coincidence?
Don't know about probability of corrupting data files with a USB Charging Cable. But, without realizing it one can connect a device using one and be puzzled why the PC doesn't communicate. Don't ask how I know that:o

A couple weeks ago, the heart rate reading stopped showing up on the screen of my 705. When i hit the on/off key to adjust the backlight, I still see the red heart lighting up, so the machine is getting the reading from my belt, but for some strange reason it doesn't show up on the screen under Heart Rate. Can anybody suggest a way to fix this?
Thanks!

As an aside, tonight I was talking with a friend about this. We both have been using GPS in a variety of venues since the early 70s.
Hmm? LORAN, maybe?
From wikipedia: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Positioning_System)
In 1978, the first experimental Block-I GPS satellite was launched.
...
By December 1993, the GPS achieved initial operational capability.
Or you guys were involved in some pretty interesting military stuff back then...
Bit of a problem, on disconnecting from computer I must have inadvertently pressed the mode button (hard reset) as I restarted the unit because I had to re-input my user data. The problem occurred next day on riding I found when I attempted to toggle from from the main data page-nothing, the lap page (avg speed, lap time and distance)is missing. Any thoughts?
When you reset, the data screen configurations reset as well. You have to choose your fields again.
Thanks for the reply, did that but problem is with the toggle to, lap screen that presents 3 values : avg spd distance and time, it's gone

I don't understand, there is no special lap screen. Only Bike Computer 1 and Bike Computer 2. You can't toggle between those? Can you see both in the list in the data field configuration menu?
I've always been able from my main data window, bike #1 or #2, to toggle, i.e., move the joystick and get a second window displaying top down: average speed, E.T. and distance or distance, E.T.
If I manually lapped or passed the start way point that data would reset and begin accumulating for the new lap.
Just to be clear I'm not referring to the mode windows of map and elevation but toggling the joystick from the main data window.
But crazy, you've never displayed lap info. Can't wait to speak to tech.
I've only seen a screen that sounds anything like that when following a course/route. Otherwise I have no idea what you are talking about.

umd, after an initially confusing talk with support, question solved. Under settings/data fields/ there is at the top Bike Comp 1 and BC 2, they were identical and being identical-no apparent change on joystick toggle during regular operation.
Go back to set up and BC 2, toggle down at least -1 data field of the BC1 total and step back out to normal op. Now toggle reveals 2 configurations. So if you have never been able to toggle under normal op that's why. Apparently, setting up BC 1 creates an identical instance of BC 2 until it is changed :notamused:
Surprised the hell out of me. I've had to do a hard reset once previously, as well as my initial set up and I only ever config'd BC 1. Perhaps an inadvertent tweak occurred under the newest version of the software.
The final was to go into BC2, toggling it down to three data fields and selecting for the data that I've been accustomed to reading, avg spd and lap data.
Anyway thanks for your replies
I've always been able to toggle between the two bike computer screens, I was just saying that there wasn't some additional special screen that always showed the specific info you were talking about. I figured it had something to do with not setting up the second screen; that's what I was trying to get at. Glad that your mystery is solved though.
Heads up..REI just dropped the price on the Deluxe 705 bundle...
- Head
- HR
- Cadence
- Map Card
$519.99

Given this, it would make sense that the 800s might be showing up a little earlier than planned. Also, might be a good backup/insurance unit for those who don't want to go touchscreen. :)

Thanks for the heads-up, Forza. I think that's what I'm getting - soon as I can rustle up the ca$h...
Hey, guys - what's a really cheap wireless bike computer that's also waterproof? I had a good one on my mountain bike, but for some reason it got wet and quit working. It's strange, as I didn't get in all that deep of water. I could still see the top of my front tire above the bow wake I was setting up as I forded the Platte River. They just don't make 'em like they used to.
Anyway, I think I want a reliable bike computer permanently mounted on one side of my riser bar, and maybe mount the Garmin 705 on the stem or the other side of the bar.
I seriously would appreciate your best suggestion for a decent (but cheap) simple wireless computer...

I've had my 705 for a few months now and am fully satisfied. Unless you are a Latest Technology Geek this is a wonderful time to pick up a very capable device that has mature and reliable technology.

My 705 won't do the soft reset (to save previous ride and start at 0 for a new ride). Issue started after latest software download. Any fixes/ideas? Thanks.

latitude, just give it a try, ok? Plot a ride on bikeroutetoaster, save it as a .tcx and send it to the 705. You can ride the course, and will give you turn by turn directions even though brt uses googlemaps instead of city nav.
Sorry to resurrect this issue, which has probably been answered many times, but can you map a course on other websites besides bikeroutetoaster that will give you turn by turn directions after uploading to the device? Also, I'm assuming that I CANNOT create a course on garmin connect, which will give me the turn by turns, correct?

I have been skimming this thread and have found a lot of incredibly useful hints and tips. Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to post all, over the life of this thread. I do have one question that I haven't found an answer for. It relates to the Garmin 605 and a route that is loaded in to the unit from one of the various sources/websites/software to create one. Is the route onto the Garmin only followable in one direction? That is, if you built the route from east to west, could you (without ever riding the route once) have the 605 lead you on the route from west to east instead? The reason I ask is that I have some turn by turn directions given to me for a 180kM route that goes from West to East but I want to put those into a map and travel from East to West instead. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recently updated to the v3.3 firmware. First of all, has anyone's unit spontaneously shut down during a workout with this version firmware? Mine did, even though batteries were full strength. Secondly, is there any way to display moving average speed instead of the average speed that includes stops? Even though I have auto pause activated, the display options now only include total avg. speed instead of moving avg. speed. I think this is a de-provement over the previous versions of software.
Also, there used to be a setting for the gps and maps to stick to roads, and wondering where that went.
Thanks.

I am pretty sure you can only follow a route as it was created, if you want the turn-by-turn guidance. However, I think you can turn off warnings or guidance and follow the pink line on the map, but won't get the turn by turn directions. Not exactly sure how to do it, and not sure if it requires you follow a route or follow a course, but I think that does matter. I just never quite figured out the difference between a route and a course.

The .tcx vs .gpx issue came up due to conflicts in user information from Garmin and sites purporting to be authoritative. Now it seems from my experience that the 705 can use .gpx, .tcx and .img files. Any program that can produce routes or courses in any of those formats is useable. I suspect that includes most GIS applications.
My edge 705 is screwed up. I just updated it no May the 18th 2011 right before uploading my ride data. Now my speed and distance will stop randomly. The main times it seems to do it are climbing hills. I have to turn it off and restart it in order to get it to work again. I replaced the battery in the speed/cadence sensor with no luck. I also turned the gps off in hopes that it would keep the speed via the cadence/speed sensor. The cadence works. Speed does not.
The connect link below shows the connect ride I did with very little climbing. 20 times off and back on again. Very frustrating.

The one below this shows my ride yesterday on the silver comet trail.

Please someone tell me how to fix this. I leave for Bicycle ride across Ga 06/04/2011 less than a week away. I have spent way too much money on brag and can not stand the thought of missing calorie/speed/time/distance and all the good info this 500 dollar computer should do.
Thanks in advance

Based on the things you have tried here are my thoughts:
- Magnet alignment may be off. Be sure it is passing the arm along the indicated line. It is hard to tell from the picture but it appears that the magnet may be to close to your seat tube.
- Magnet is lost some of it's strength. If you have another magnet give it a try.
- GSC10 has died. Replace unit!

I just tried another magnet and low and behold the speed starts working passing a different magnet over the sensor. Then I got a screw drive and stuck it to the wheel magnet. "Click" Very strong. I moved it back toward the rear of the bike about a 1/2 " and it started working fine. I was stuck on the update messing it up because I am so unmechanicly inclined. I have not thoroughly tested it yet because it is late and dark and my but still hurts from the century yesterday.
Thanks for the help. I greatly appreciate it. Now to figure out if I need chamois cream or to shave my hairy but. LOL

Not sure if this was covered in the last 50 pages, or even in the owners manual, but I just stumbled upon this nifty shortcut today. Since I have multiple bikes, I found the menu system for switching between bike profiles cumbersome. However, If you push and hold the lower left side button, you get a pop up screen to toggle between your saved bike profiles. Much easier than cycling through the menu systems. Works from the bike computer screen and the map screen, and I suspect the elevation profile screen as well, but I did not try it.
Wish I knew this little short cut two years ago.

Hmmm. This is the ONLY way I know how to do it! I only wish they'd give us more than three bike profiles. What do I do with the other bikes? Record the miles and info under something it isn't?

Tried to find (via search fn) info about renaming rides on a G 605. Is there a way to replace the date with a more descriptive name, while the ride is saved in History?
Earlier in the thread, someone asked about the map disappearing from the display, even tho' the checkbox to display it was ticked. I've had this happen several times, it appears the memory card vibrates out slightly, and needs a gentle push back into it's slot...
Thanks for any tips.
