Is there a workaround- like if I get off course I tell it to "go to" the destination for that particular route?
Ben - I need some more time to ponder this one (and I need to get in bed). That said, if you tell it to take you to the destination point it will work just fine.

Just to add to what you probably already know.
Disableing the cadence sensor or removing the battery from it will keep the Edge recording. I reported the same problem to Garmin.
Their tech support asked me to try those 2 things and get back to them which I did. I'm waiting for a response. They do know of the problem and so we hope thay fix it in the next firmware rev.

If you are ever on a ride and you loose a magnet or your battey dies (like mine did a month ago) simply turn off the sensor on the Edge.
For those still learning the Edge you do this by: pressing "mode", Settings, ANT+Sport, Accessories. For the Cadence Sensor Present selection choose "No".
Once you do this you will not have Cadence and the Edge will rely on the GPS signal for everything.

I have constructed 50+ routes in MapSource which will comprise the trip, but
have not yet loaded all the routes onto the 705. I have City Navigator loaded on a 2gb SD card in the 705. I will have computer access occasionally while on the trip, but I will not have access to the computer that is loaded with City Navigator.
Are the maps that you are using in Mapsource the same as the ones loaded to the SD card? There have been some minor glitches when routing with routes created in different map datums than are on the Edge. They have been minor but do occur.
I am guessing that some of the issues with re-routing to the beginning could be related to this issue too.
Your planned testing will help you learn the nuances of the Edge. I don't think that any of the issues you encounter will stop you from enjoying your trip and the Edge.
Yes, I am using the exact same maps that I created on MapSource in the 705. I have not strayed beyond the Garmin realm for any of the mapping software/creation, so hopefully everything works.
Thanks,
Ben
Ok- when getting the 705 to work off a 4 cell (like 4 AA cells) battery pack charger - you will need to solder up a custom cable USB. Possibly with some resistors on it:
It's not the 2 unused data connections that need to be looped.

Quick (hopefully easy) question...
The linked site mentions a "quick menu" you can access directly from the Map page.

How do I get to that quick menu?

I may have created a little confusion about the re-routing problem. I once said that the 705 re-routed me back to the start when I deviated slightly from the planned route. The route in question was a loop, so the destination was the same as the start. What the 705 does if you go off course (at least on MapMyRide routes), is to re-route you to the end of your planned route by whatever route it decides is best, rather than back to the closest point on your planned route. As noted above, Garmin is aware of this and apparently plans to do something about it.
I did in fact follow the re-route on one occasion and it worked fine; it just wasn't the route I had planned.
I am wondering if there is a way to take a route after uploading to Garminconnect and create a print out of turn by turn directions? I would like to drive a route I rode last year to show my wife and figure there has got to be an easy way!
Thanks,
Steve
Oroluk- thanks for the clarification.
I just got a pair of Gator 700Cx25 tires to replace the 23s... I'm doing a week-long tour starting next weekend and need the more rugged tire for my Trek Madone 5.5....
Is anyone else using a 705 with 25's??? What have you set wheel circumference to???
I'm currently set at 2096 for 23s I just replaced. Wonder how much the 25s will throw off accuracy.
A question about routing on the 705 with maps created using MapSource (cross-posted to the MotionBased forum as well)-
Is there any reason I should be using multiple "via" points within a route? If I am happy with the route that has been calculated - is there any benefit to adding additional via points? Will it help with/affect re-routing?
Thanks.

You sure can! I am actually loading up a 2gb SD card with most of the US topo maps. It is taking up about 1.8 gb of the card. ETA is about 10 hours to load, OUCH!!!!
Dumb question, but how do you load the map onto the card?
Click on the "transfer" menu on the top bar (w/"File" "Edit" "Find" etc.) within MapSource (which is (or is part of) City Navigator NT). You will get the option to transfer maps, waypoints, and routes.

ok, I clicked on Transfer, then Send to Device. I get the following message "To transfer data to your device, select maps or create waypoints, routes or tracks" with OK being the only option, so I select OK and nothing happens. Am I missing a step for selecting Transfer?
It seems that I should be getting a drop down at this point but that's not happening

My Shimano Flightdeck's internal defaults are 2105 for 700x23 and 2115 for 700x25. That's a little different from your setting, but the difference of about 10 makes sense.

You may need to make a small route and then send it to the 705, which will activate a menu and the option to send the map will appear (and should not be grayed out). I thought I sent the map to the 705 without a route though...

I was on the phone with Garmin and they seem to think I may be zoomed in too much on my map, that migth be causing the issue. So I'm going to check that when I get home as well.
Hopefully I will be able to post a "I got it!" thread later today...

Yup. Using My Computer you should see your Edge AND the SD card inserted in it. They should both show up as SEPERATE external hard drives to your PC.

Welcome to the world of Garmin maps! Now you have to unlock them for your device. This will need to be done before you send them you your Edge.
In Mapsource click Utilities, Unlock Maps and it should walk you through the prompts. Your maps will have come with an unlock code that will allow you to ulock them for use on one GPS. If I recall you will also need your Edge plugged in when you do it.
Once you ulock them resend the maps you want on the SD card and it will send the unlock codes with them.

I had my second instance where the 705 autonomously shut off. When I "rebooted" the grade function wasn't working and it said my average speed was something like 576MPH. I checked the Training Center stats after the ride (200 mile Seattle to Portland) and it said that during that "lap" that I had gone 58 miles (correct) in 2 minutes and 45 seconds (not correct :)).
I tried to do a lap reset to get my average correct from there on but it seemed not to work. Naturally my average just continued to drop throughout the rest of the ride. Fortunately, I was able to estimate from from the Training Center stats what my probable overall average speed was for the full ride (17.4 +/-).
I had previously reported this bug to Garmin. I will probably submit this one as well. Really bummed me out that I did not have complete stats for the whole ride.
On the plus side, the turn-by-turn directions were a comforting confirmation of the Dan Henry symbols (which were not as numerous as they could have been) and the riders strung out in front of me. I liked having "Distance to Destination" on the Map Page. That was very encouraging during the last 50 miles, to watch that number steadily decline. The cadence function kept me honest, reminding me when I wasn't puhing as hard as I could. The heart rate monitor basically reassured me that I was more or less staying in zone 3 most of the time.
I'm still optimistic about the 705, but Garmin has some significant bugs that need to be addressed and fixed.
How can I upload rides from veloroutes into my 705? When I export to gpx or tcx and try to upload to motionbased, all I get are error messages. Am I missing a step?
Could someone please help? I am ditching my Polar CS400 for the Garmin 705. I checked on Performance and am wondering should I spend the extra $ for the Data Card & Street Maps????
thanks
Get a 2gb mini-SD card and the City Navigator 2008 DVD (maybe 2009 is out? probably has no or minimal updates). This way you will have a back-up if your SD card gets erased + you can do your mapping on the 'puter. The stock map on the 705 is not enough.

The VeloRoutes site is down at the moment. What formats will it download in? CRS, GPX, TCX?
When you say you are exporting to a GPX or TCX to upload to MotionBased what program are you doing this from? I belive that with MotionBased you simply point it to the GPX file on the Edge for the activity you want to updload and it will take it from there.

I'm not uploading past rides from my 705 to my hard drive, but rather, trying to download routes I've created online via veloroutes. e.g. I rode about 20 miles of new roads this morning and had the whole ride mapped out via veloroutes, but couldn't get it onto my 705. Here's how I thought it worked:
1) Map ride via veloroutes.net
2) Download ride to computer hard drive via .gpx or .tcx file
3) Upload ride from computer hard drive to MB via the manual upload function
4) Transfer ride from MB to 705
I also tried directly parking the .gpx/.tcx files onto the 705 without success. There has to be a way to do this...

You were so close in your method. The mistake was that Motion Based is not part of the equation at all.
1) Create ride on favorite website.
2) Download ride in one of the following formats: GPX, TCX, or CRS.
3) Place ride in one of the following folders (folder can be on Edge or SD card in Edge):
- GPX - Garmin\GPX\
- CRS & TCX - Garmin\Courses\
Once loaded here is how to follow them:
Route (GPX)
1) press "menu"
2) select "Where To?"
3) select "Saved Rides"
4) Select the route from the list that appears
5) Press enter
6) Select "Navigate" from the pop-up menu
When following a route you will have access to the turn by turn directions screen by pressing the "mode" button.
Course (TCX & CRS)
1) press "menu"
2) select "Training"
3) select "Courses"
4) Select the course from the list that appears
5) Press enter
6) Select "Do Course" in the pop-up menu
When following a course a the course screen will appear in addition to the normal screens that you have. If you press enter it will cycle the screen through the course sub screens. Also, if you have the virtual partner feature enabled you will see the VP on the profile and maps sub-screens.
Note: A route/course name preceded by SD simply means that this route/course is saved on the SD card and not in internal memory. It will navigate it just fine from the SD card and you do not need to move it.

My Shimano Flightdeck's internal defaults are 2105 for 700x23 and 2115 for 700x25. That's a little different from your setting, but the difference of about 10 makes sense.
Revisited this thread to see if I there's a speed calibration issue going on, and glad I did. Either my performance has dropped off by 15% the last couple weeks after going to firmware 2.2, or there's been a glitch. :twitchy:
Dicovered my 'automatic' wheel size setting was coming in as 1685mm. Set it to 2075 as mentioned by one poster and glad to say that this morning's ride on one of my standard courses is back to ~ normal speed :notamused:
What should the precise setting be for 700 x 23's ? I see a couple number guesses throughout this thread. Maybe one of the Garmin techy's could enlighten us?
Wonder what further adventures the next firmware 2.3 will hold in store for us. :bang:

2075 will put you very close to whatever your own exact # is. Mine is 2090, that is only a 0.7% difference.
There are many variables: specific tire in use, air pressure, rider weight, etc. The only way to get your precise # is to to a roll out while you are seated on the bike (feet up) and then measure that distance and divide it by the number of revolutions the wheel did.
2.3 is due out soon. I have been emailing with a Garmin tech. In my last email I asked if he had an ETA yet, waiting for a reply now.

Maybe I'll hold off for a while on 2.3 after it's released. Will keep an eye on other's experiences here for a bit first.

I'm just starting to use my 705 with HR and CAD. I don't have an SD card in it, just using the internal storage.
If I take the time to set up my user and bike profiles, tell it I've got a HR and CAD sensor, then turn the unit off. Next time I turn the unit on it's lost all those settings...
It manages to retain which data fields I want, but doesn't seem to save the profile settings.

There is a bug in currently when you are making changes that affect your profile. Make sure the GPS has a satelite fix before you make any changes. To be sure you have a fix let the unit power on and aquire a fix without pressing any buttons. Once it displays the Bike 1 screen you should be good to make your changes to the settings.
