Back on Groundhog day the local groundhog forecaster said early spring....

Environment Canada says:

City of Toronto
3:53 PM EST Tuesday 4 March 2008
Winter storm warning for
City of Toronto upgraded from winter storm watch
..A mixed bag of wintry precipitation on the way..

This is a warning that dangerous winter weather conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements.

Another winter storm currently over Kentucky will track northeastward just south of the lower Great Lakes overnight and Wednesday. As this storm approaches it will bring a mix of wintry precipitation to southern Ontario. For areas along the north shores of Lake Erie and eastern Lake Ontario as well as along the St Lawrence river Valley..It will predominantly be a freezing rain and ice pellet event. Further north..In the corridor from Chatham to Toronto and northeastward to Ottawa..The precipitation will begin and end as snow with a prolonged period of ice pellets or freezing rain in between. Still further north..Along a line from Windsor to Barrie to Petawawa..The cold air will remain and the precipitation will be mainly in the form of snow at times possibly mixed with ice pellets.

..Freezing rain warning..A significant period of freezing rain is expected to develop tonight over areas to the north of the lower Great Lakes. For regions along the north shore of Lake Erie..A brief snowfall is expected to begin later this afternoon before the change over to freezing rain and ice pellets occurs. For areas adjacent to Lake Ontario and along the St Lawrence Valley..The precipitation will begin as snow early this evening then change to freezing rain and ice pellets late this evening.

..Winter storm warning..Snow will begin late this afternoon over southwestern Ontario and spread northeastward towards London..Kitchener and Toronto early this evening and towards Peterborough and Ottawa late this evening. The precipitation will begin as snow then switch to a mix of ice pellets and freezing rain before changing back to snow overnight in south central Ontario and Wednesday morning in eastern Ontario. Between 10 and 15 centimetres of snow and ice pellets is expected to fall over the duration of the event. The snow and ice pellet accumulation is expected to be very heavy for those shovelling.

..Snowfall warning..The snow will begin in southwestern Ontario late this afternoon then spread northeastwards towards Barrie early this evening to reach the Pembroke area near midnight. For the portion of southwestern Ontario in the snowfall warning snowfall amounts of 15 centimetres are expected. Further northeast along an axis from Barrie to Petawawa higher amounts are expected with 20 to 25 centimetres possible by Wednesday afternoon.

Travellers should be prepared to alter plans accordingly as driving conditions once again will deteriorate significantly tonight and Wednesday across all of southern Ontario.

Most anything you'd serve with BBQ'd raccoon or squirrel will work just fine.

Yes, you'll need a pound of red potatoes and a pound of carrots chopped. Place the ground hog on the cedar shingle(or board) in the bottom of a roaster. Cover with the carrots and potatos and add 4 cups of water. Cook on 375 for 2-2.5 hours or untill the groundhog is tender. Then remove the groundhog, potatoes, carrots and cedar shingle. Throw the groundhog hog away and eat the shingle.....

Snow.. 4 INCHES OF SNOW monday night. Now it was all gone before the sun went down on tuesday but it is March in Texas C'mon!
Ruined my whole weeks commute and riding plans
Sunday afternoon/evening nasty winds and thunderstorms lasting till mid morning Monday so no commute then.
Monday night till tuesday morning snow so no commute.
About 120 miles behind where I should have been since no ride Sunday :(

My sister dated a guy from puxatony when she was in college I think I'm gonna have a talking to with her. Oh wait. It says Puxatony Phil got it right
"PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. — Brace yourself for more wintry weather. Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow Saturday, leading the groundhog to forecast six more weeks of winter. The rodent was pulled from his stump by members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner... "
You can't listen to any other groundhogs Phil knows his stuff ;)

My ears were ringing:eek:

Yes I have ate groundhog before, as stated above it is tough but then again most small game is. Just make sure you remove the scent glands, you'll only made that mistake once. Generally groundhogs, woodchucks, whistle pigs (whatever you call em) are prepared much the same way as squirrel via soaking in cold saltwater overnight. When I ate it we were camping, cut the meat into strips and fried it.

Recipe for groundhog that sounds better than my woodchuck shoe leather strips. (http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/martin/wildrecipes/wgrwoch2.htm)

Dang it Neil, now everyone knows the extent of my inner Hillbilly.

INNER!?!

Neil F. and I may try the groundhog stew while on tour. Bau, can it be prepared over a campfire? Neil F., is groundhog Kosher?

I haven't seen a lot of groundhogs in southeast Texas (haven't looked for them). I'm thinking the recipe would be the same as "possum on the half shell" (armadillo), but without the shell.

Personally I wouldn't recommend anything with too much prepping involved. You are going to have slaughter and clean the animal in addition to having a way to keep all your perishable ingredients fresh. Seriously though, if you want something that you and Neil can carry over the trip and cook with then buy a cast iron dutch oven (http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2582169&cp=&sr=1&origkw=dutch+oven&kw=dutch+oven&parentPage=search&searchId=24229310524). There are many quick and easy recipes for dutch ovens, you can hang them over the fire or set the oven directly in the coals once your fire has died down a bit. Recipes!
