I just bought a set of 700c rims used in great cond for my road bike. I went from 6 in the back to 8. My question is this. I am using shimano index shifting, I am gonna have to change my rear der anyway, can I go with another index der or do I have to get a SRAM compatible der. Hope this isnt to silly of a question.

8 speed sachs freewheels(The ones I have in stock anyway) are spaced for shimano.

That is good to know. I believe that the freewheel is original on the rims and only a year or so old. Is there a way of looking at the freewheel and telling. Thanks

You could measure the thickness of the cogs and also the space between cogs and then compare to Shimano's specs, However, Sachs was making their parts shimano compatible long before SRAM bought them out. You shouldn't have any problems using Shimano shifters.

The indexing is in the shifters, not in the derailleurs. The derailleurs move where the shifters tell them to and the shifters determine the step to step move of the cable, which differs from system to system (Shimano, Campy and some SRAM, but not all. SRAm makes shifters for both major systems).
