View Full Version : Monster Cookie
So who is planning on this ride? It will be my big season opener :p I plan on consuming lot's of cookies and having a great ride with a friend or 2 if I can convince them :D Let's cross our wet toes to a dry ride;)
I'll be coming up for the ride, and the cookies!! The macaroons are sick!!! I'll have too many as I usually do:D
Yes, a dry day would be nice. We also need a killer pace line.

I've never done a ride before, but maybe I'll try this one out in a couple of months. I'm working on getting a bike together that would be rad for this.
cdotbois, this will be my 2nd ever organized ride so you'll be in good company:D As a side note, your signature quote is pretty "rad" :p I'm a dork, but I loved that movie. I haven't said rad for so long. That felt good :roflmao: Tell us about the bike you are getting together.
"We are Fred together" :roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

I only know it from "I Am the Walrus," but I heard it's performed in Across the Universe. Is that the movie?
I meant to see that flick, but...well it's a long story. :) I laughed just the same as you when I read that line though. Someone had to archive it in a signature.
It makes me feel a little more confident that it's only your second ride. I mostly commute, and I haven't put in what you might call "serious" miles. I went from Salem to Corvallis once, but that's my only experience with longer distances all in one go. The ride sounds pretty laid back though, and I'm definitely considering it.
"Rad" is a choice word of mine. It doesn't get all the credit it deserves, so I like to help keep things in balance.
I'm putting together a Torelli frame I picked up off of craigslist about a month ago. I'm trying for an all/mainly Campagnolo set up to keep the Italian thing going, but that sort of limits my options and makes things a little more expensive, and I have all sorts of other things I want to buy as well, no doubt. Give me two months, though, and it might be all grown up by then. *hopeful!*

I'm down with the whole Rad concept.
Monster Cookie is April 27th....

This guy knows! ^^^ :D
I thought about this one last year, it looks fun, so maybe this year.
If the weather is good, we should have a pretty good crew coming over from Newport, but probably not all together at once.
Shifty: Keep me posted on your plans...if you're going to put together a good one like last year's Covered Bridge.
Hey folks, my wife and I would be happy to lead a "quick" group on Monster Cookie. We'll be riding our newly built custom tandem and would enjoy flying with a group.
We've ridden the "Cookie" numerous times and it's a hoot, big fun, fast course with only a couple small "bumps" or hills along the way. We'll try and keep the pace where folks are happiest which for us on this course usually starts out at around 17mph and raises to around 19/20 or even a bit faster if we're pulling a "big train" and folks want to really fly.
We may have 2 or 3 other tandem teams with us and if that's the case then any single behind us will have an almost free ride for 62miles.
Holla back,

Oh Nice! You should post a gratuitous picture of your lovely tandem so I can seek you out ;).
I would love to suck that tandem wheel and push myself; however, I am going to be riding with a very good friend (if she commits:p) and we will be riding at a leisurely pace this time. It will be her first big ride and I'm determined to help her succeed.
Just wait until summer and I'll totally take up the wheel sucking offer:D:D.

Maybe before the ride we should post some pics of ourselves so we can at least shout out to each other: "Hey: puff puff: you're ____________ , HELLLLLLLOOOOOO I know you from BF's" :D:p
This was our Bike Forums group from 2 years ago Monster Cookie. What we've been doing is plan a spot to meet before we ride, then everyone rides as a group, or individually. Another group this size would be fun!

My wife Kasia and I will try to make it this year (our first!).
My wife and I plan to do this one too. This is our first year of doing cycling events, what we have done so far we like. Overall finding PDX area cyclists a pretty decent bunch :^)
If I make it it will be the day after spending a week at disneyland, and it will be on a mtn bike pulling my 6 year old on a piccalo. Doubt I can hang with a paceline.. :) ...Yes I am still alive....barely.
Jakey!! Great to hear from you! I didn't know Torelli made mountain bikes;)
I've been thinking about a spring ride to Silver Falls, what do you think?
I'd be up for that...though I need some serious miles before I try to keep even a decent pace. I have been commuting nearly 150 miles a day for the past several months. Thats all changed now...now its 6 miles...so I will try to commute by bike as much as I can..
We'll be camping there (cabining there actually) in a few weeks. You could have a pit stop and some hot dogs at our site for fuel if you don't mind my kids oogling strangers on bicycles :p

Found this thread a bit late... I might be in for Monster Cookie this year. Looking at that pic and remembering how awesome that double paceline was might actually get my butt on the road soon. ha

I'll be at the Monster Cookie for sure. Depending on how things go, I may be volunteering for a late shift as well for this as I'm part of the club that puts this ride on.

Looks like I'll have to come out of my self-induced retirement and get on the saddle!
PedalMasher, aren't you the RTB weather beacon? How's your luck with the Cookie? 2 years ago was great...

I'm on injured reserve and will miss the Monster. Maybe I'll come up and take the photos and eat cookies.

I'm still thinking about doing it on the Bridgestone, though!

Hi,
This sounds great, and the scenery should be familiar to me, since it's on some roads I traveled last year when I rode from Champoeg to Eugene. I've done only one organized ride: the Portland Bridge Pedal. Is the Monster Cookie ride suitable for folks who are a bit slow and who'd rather not ride in pacelines?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I've only done 2 organized rides. I've done the Portland Bridge Pedal and the Vineride (in Newburg, OR) and I think that the Monster Cookie has about the same amount of hills as the Vineride (the 65'er that is). I'm slowly getting back my legs and lungs this season (hello to me the fair weather rider:D).
oops...edit:
forgot to add that I've "heard" and many more will chime in...the Monster Cookie is a pretty "flat" ride. I think there is less than 1500ft in ascent the whole ride. Correct me experienced ones if you know :)

Ben, That's one hell of a break! Sorry to hear this news, hope you were riding with others, got help right away.
If you get down to Eugene we'll have to have a pitcher and compare x-rays:D
Hope you heal quickly!

Yeah, the Cookie is very flat. There's one short 'hill' about 3/4 of the way through - otherwise you can pretty much be in the big chainring all day. Pacelines and tandoms really get some speed going on this ride. I'm sure the Vineride has a little more up and down.
Ben, ouch!

Not a whole lot they can do except put me in a sling, kind of like broken ribs. 3 weeks off the bike.

The Monster Cookie has a little bit of something for everyone. Like others have said, it's as flat as a pancake for the most part. You'll find riders of every shape, size, and ability riding anything you can imagine. From lean, fast racers on $5-6,000 dollar carbon bikes, to the average family riding along on Wal-Mart mountain bikes.
There are plenty of different people to ride with or you can go solo, well-stocked stops to rest and get some food, and a great atmosphere to ride.

Long story short, I screwed the pooch; don't ever sit up (with no hands on bars) to take a break and/or drink without one hand on the bars. I've done it a million times, but this time I paid the price (although I had some "help" from something on the road.)
Surgery on Tuesday...I get new hardware in the form of Titanium clavicle plate. At least it's Dura-Ace... :D

Thanks so much, Savagewolf -- that information really helps me. It sounds like the ride will be lots of fun. I'll be riding a recumbent that I've had only for 2 weeks, so even this flat ride will have plenty of challenges for me. I'll be the slow person on the dorky-looking bike. And if that one hill is as steep as it looks on the elevation profile, I'll be the one walking :D I've already told the people coming with me that they can feel free to leave me behind if I'm too slow.
Thanks again for the info and the encouragement.

I'm too uncoordinated to ride with no hands, so I won't get injured in that particular way. I *have* flown over the handlebars, though :)
I hope the surgery goes well and you recover quickly. Your new hardware may make things interesting when going through security at the airport...
