Yep, bike season is getting here. I'm getting antsy. I was futzing with the Hoss this morning.

"Hey look, the wheel is out of true a little bit."

"Hey, that spoke there seems kind of loose."

"Oh. It's not loose."

Yeah, another busted spoke. I must have broken it several months ago, or it just decided to let loose over the winter.

Anyway, I had some spoke issues with this wheel back in August and I kind of don't want to go through that again. Besides, the downhill rims on the wheels are really freakin' heavy.

In my little fantasy world, I'd run off and buy some nice lightweight racing wheels to replace these wheels. They'd be super light and never break. I'd also have a pony. That could fly.

So, anybody care to indulge me with some possible wheel setup suggestions? Looking for something with a disc hub that deal with a 200+lb abusive rider on a 30+lb. hardtail. Flying pony suggestions also welcome, but not necessary.

Have the wheel hand-rebuilt with DT or Wheelsmith straight 14ga spokes. I rode a Mavic XC-717 (rim brake) on an XT hub laced with 14ga DT spokes for quite a while and never had any broken spoke issues.

What kind of abuse did you put those Mavics through? Looks like they make a disc version that's almost half the weight of the Alex DM24s I have.

Butted spokes make for a stronger, longer lasting wheel for the reasons listed here (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/wheelbuild.html#spokes). DT Alpines make for the strongest wheels possible.
