View Full Version : Question About a Wheel Upgrade on my Mountain Bike
I am going to get new wheels built for my mountain bike style commuter (26 in wheels). I am building 36 spoke wheel, 4 cross, on 6 speed NOS Deore XT hubs. My problem is that I am torn on what rim to use. I have narrowed the field down to three options: a low priced option (Sun Mammoth), a mid priced option (Salsa Gordo), and a kinda spendy option (Velocity Aero Heat). You all are sort of like my source book when I am stuck (also a great place to drool over gorgeous bikes). Does anyone know anything about any over these rims or have any recs? I want to end up with wheels that are strong enough to take my weight as an uberclyde.

I weigh 235lbs and just built up a set of wheels to tour on. With my loaded panniers the load will be close to 300 lbs.
The wheels are Mavic XM 719 rims (36) spoke, XT hubs and DT Alpine III spokes. The Alpine spokes are triple butted.

I use the Sun Mammoth in the rear. The first build I got didn't use DT spokes and I started breaking spokes after only 200 miles. I then had the wheel rebuilt with DT spokes and has been fine.
I suspect the first build was not done well, but next time I will try something else. My weight is 325.

I just got my recumbent built up with a Sun Mammoth 36h, 4 cross, on an XT hub.
My wrench's other idea was to do the Salsa Gordo's, but the Mammoth was cheap (19$ on NB at the time). Some have said that getting tires on and off of the Mammoth is tough, but I haven't had the pleasure of even riding it. Oh yeah, DT spokes as well.
Thanks for the advice, guys. I just ordered some Mammoths and can't wait to get my new wheels. Once again, you all rock!!

Tom did you have Skunk River do that build or did you go with the other guys here in town?
