Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Can my bike take it?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
When I stopped riding my '99 Trek 7700 I weighed 179 lbs. Now, some 8 years later and 80 lbs heavier I would like to start riding again. The problem is I love this particular bike- The Rolf Vector wheels, the Ruby Metro front suspension, the Bassano ultra-soft saddle on the suspension seat. Would my weight of 260 lbs. damage this bike? Should I buy a cheaper hybrid to ride while I lose the first 50 or so pounds? I have my 7700 parked in the kitchen- between the fridge and the microwave- to remind me of how great it was to be in shape and riding all over town on a nice bike.
Any advice welcome. Thanks in advance. :)

Well, you could use it as a motivator if you buy a cheaper Hybrid to kick start and "earn" your way back to the 7700. ;)
Vectors, huh? Yeah, at 14 spokes, I'd say they were a little light. Maybe buy yourself a set of 36 spoke wheels instead of a whole bike might be an option.

Hi dayrun, welcome to BikeForums!
I'd agree with Tom, those wheels sound a little lightweight, but you could definitely go to a higher spoke count, and still ride that bike.

I third what Tom said! Spend the money you'd spend on a cheap hybrid - say $300 - $400 - and build a killer wheelset. Then.. rock it until you "earn" those light wheels back!

the suspension seat post and ruby fork might be troublesome as well
