Northern California - Mt. Hamilton East Side

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have not done the climb from the east side yet and am interested in doing so. I should not be surprised that a quick search on Bikely comes up with Glen's username. I doubt anyone would be interested in the century type rides starting from Livermore but he mapped out a nice little doozy (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Mt-Hamilton-Quimby-to-the-bridge-and-back) of 40 miles. Would anyone be interested in this during an upcoming weekend?

Last September I rode from Livermore over Hamiliton, back on Calaveras to Sunol and back to Livermore. It was 102 miles, with 7700 feet of climbing. It was Labor Weekend and it was HOT!
I'd like to do that again this spring.

I've done this ride twice. It's a challenge to say the least. I would do it with you but I've got a service to go to on Sat, and Sunday I have to stay close to home. Perhaps another time.
I hear the flowers are starting to come out. Should be a beautiful ride.
Water is an important issue on this ride. (Like it's not on any other??). You can buy water at the Junction Cafe, but I don't think they open until 10:00 or 11:00. And I don't believe they allow you to use their outside faucets. By refueling at J/C, it makes for a better ride up Hamilton. Plus by the time you come back, they are open for a quick sammie or a beer in case you need that type of nourishment.
You're into pain, aren't you???

Ramon, put it out there sometime, just not this weekend, and see what happens. I've not done all of it, either, but, what I have done is worth the effort.

I did that last year as part of a solo century. Probably similar to what PrincessZippy did. Kicked my butt. The only things scarier than the climbs were the patrons at the Junction Cafe. Hooeey! Can we say "Deliverance"?
But I would love to do it again :D.
Ouch! Please sir, may I have another? (Free beer to the first person to identify the movie reference here.)

I didn't mean this weekend, but in the next month or something. I figure park at the usual school off of 130 and head back down Alum Rock to S. White. Use the stretch of White to Quimby as a nice warm up before the climbing begins. Refill the water if needed at Grant park then climb at a comfortable pace to the summit. Take a nice break there and refill before heading on to the east. Having not done it, the elevation image looks like a steep descent and on the way back mentally prepare for a "Sierra" road type experience. Another break at the top before taking 130 all the way back to Alum Rock.
Ramon,
Here's a route I actually prefer to the 40 miler I plotted on Bikely. It's longer, a metric century, but has a nice warm-up through Alum Rock Park, up Crothers and down Clayton before the Quimby climb. Total is 8500 feet of climb. Count me in if you want to do it.

BTW - I'm thinking of doing the Mines Rd, San Antonio Valley, East Side of Hamilton, Calaveras loop this Saturday if anyone would like to join me.

One of my eventual goals is to be able to do a ride over the east side of Hamilton that starts in Dublin or Livermore. Take a BART train over to there or park over there. That totals up to 90-100 miles however and I'm not at that level yet.
For now my suggestion was to simply modify the standard Ron route up Mt. Hamilton. Park at the school on Kirk off of Alum Rock and head down Alum Rock to White to Quimby.
The updated route Glenn posted also looks very inviting.
I rode from the library in Livermore to Mt. Hamilton and back last weekend. 96 miles total. It was a test as I have only been riding since the middle of July. It was an awesome ride. Challenging, but we kept within ourselves and set our own pace. We let the faster people take off and did not try to keep up.
You can get water at this little place right before the J Cafe from a spigot on the side of the building and then again at the summit. We kept well fed along the way too and that was a major help.

I did this route on a TnT training ride last Spring - although we went up Sierra instead of Calaveras. We ended up closer to 10,000 feet of climbing, but we used a rather inventive route back to Livermore (the coaches mapped out every hill in Pleasanton, as far as I can tell). My legs hurt for several days afterwards - but that was one of the more enjoyable rides we did last year.
Bring your large water bottles - as someone else noted, there's only one place along a 45 mile stretch to refill your water bottles.
