Road Cycling - Just broke 5000 miles for the year!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I bonked at 4996 miles, but couldn’t stop there... It was nice to watch the old cateye tick over the 5000 mile mark for the year. Last year I hit the 5K mark in late November. Glad to get it out of the way a month earlier. Oddly enough, I haven’t done a single century ride this year. I have two rides over 80 miles, but most of my rides have been between 30 and 50 miles. I'll aim for a solo century next weekend.
Has anyone hit there yearly mileage goal yet? How close are you?

And you fixed the forums several times and got a new server. And you claim to work?? Are you sure about the working part?
Congratulations. Beats me by about 1,500 miles!
Incidentally, my computer on the road bike is about to go from 6,999 to 7,000 miles in about a mile. I think it is fun to watch when they turn the 1,000 mile markers.
Edit
Oops - just went and checked that sucker and it says 7,001. Just missed seeing the turn. Darn! Must have ridden farther than I thought today.

Congratulations!
My goal was 5k for the year but it looks like I am only (like it is a looser number, not!) get to around 4300 for the year. I am at 3700 now.

4,263 as of today...on my way to 5,000 I hope...it's tough being in the Northeast, and I missed March and April due to injury. Did get in rides of:
104, 100, 100 & 130
Not bad for my first year of cycling...EVER...and at 42...boy am I hooked. If I'm not riding my bike I'm thinking about it!

My "official goal" was 2003 miles. As of tonight I'm a little over 3200 miles. :D (my secret goal was 3000 miles) So I hit both my goals! :D
Dang Joe, 5,000 is great! especially for a "northern tier state" .

Congrats Joe, great year for you.
After topping 5k for each of the last two years I added running to my exercise routine. This change caused my cycling miles and weight to go down this year and my 10 mile ITT average speed to go up by nearly 2 MPH. :D

Way to go, Joe! We all want you to live a long time and keep the Forums going indefinitely.
I was upset with myself when I missed my "ride 100 miles for each year of my age" goal this year. It would have been 5200 miles, and I was more than 1000 short. Stuff happens.
But things have picked up in the six weeks since that last birthday, and I have high hopes for Year 53.

Great Job Joe!! I agree with Dnvr Fox - when do you work? 5000 miles and countless hours keeping the forum up and running ---- I'M IMPRESSED!!
Some of us work and unfortunately I (until the end of Sept) worked 6 days a week. This left me little time to ride besides living in Wyoming I have logged around 1500 miles all together. No where near my goal - 2500.
Wow, Great going to all of you!
I am still working on breaking the 500 mile mark! (started tracking my miles in July)
Just hope the weather holds. Montana can get real cold and snowy...

of course this is only OUTSIDE miles, and doesn't count all of the hours on the indoor trainer...bummer, indoor training is a big part of all year cycling here in NY.

Wow! amazing, I got my bike on 8/29 of this year and have put 335 miles on it, I have trouble riding everyday (with one day off) but I am getting better.
I'm amazed how far all of you ride and want to join your club :D
How do choose the distance per year?

just turned 3000 miles. my goal was to ride 4000 miles and not have it interfere with the enjoyment/activities of my 3 children and wife and friends. mission may be accomplished (but i'd also have to interview those involved)

Well, I dont have much responsabilites... no signifigant other really frees up your time ;) Work ~36hrs a week, and get to work on the site at work. Leaves me an hour each morning to ride, and ride to work two or three times a week. Life, is good ;)
Infact, today is my last "9 - 5" day at work. Starting Tuesday, I will move to a 2 - 10 shift, no more commuting for me, but I should have two - three hours a day to ride. :)

My 4000th mile came while passing someone durring the ms150 heh. But that's since I started riding a year ago, probably 2000 since Jan. Need to step it up a notch I suppose ;)

You and I are doing about the same. This is my first year of cycling and I've got 4400+ miles so far. I missed six weeks in May and June due to building a new house and moving. I don't have any centuries yet though. My longest ride is 75 miles. I think my first century will have to wait till next year.

Great job everyone! I had no goal, but cracked 1000 mi.
yeh... I`m also at 5,000 + for the year. Guess with the great summer we have had this year I could`nt resist hauling out the bike at every opportunity,
Its turned bad now though over the last couple of days so maybe its near time to hybernate the road bike.... :(
Way to go Joe!
Just passing 4000 for the year since January, should get to 4500 by end of year (weather permitting)
Not bad since I have a full time law job together with part time university teaching and lose 12 commutes a year (300 miles)because of donating platelets. I rode only about 75 miles in February because of icy weather and strong winds (excuses, excuses:))
Wish could manage a bit more, but time is tight.

Congrats on the mileage!
As for you others that can't seem to find that kind of time for riding, because of work, or ???. . . you might want to consider riding to/from work. I only have a 12.5 mile ride, one way, but 2 trips x 5 days week x 52 weeks a year means 6,000 miles/year easy. And that's without recreational riding.
I realize this may be unrealistic for some climates, but it would still be a good way to get in extra miles during the milder seasons. Just a thought, though I'm sure it's been considered. . .
I checked my records last night and find I'm already just coming up to 4200 miles rather than 4000. However I will have to go hard to get to 5000 before the end of the year. If I commute everyday it is 125 miles a week but with the weather we are due to have I think that's unlikely. Might get to 4800 or 4900 with luck.
I'm at about 4500, but I've only been biking since June...

Joe, if you ever try to sell your bike, will you advertise it as only 5000 city or highway miles?

Congrats there Joe!! 5000 miles for those of us who have day jobs is a lot of riding, but it's really cool to achieve...I passed the 5000 mile mark here the first weekend in october when I was down in ohio doing the columbus fall challenge, a 2 day ride 100 miles a day, it came sometime during then...
Right now I'm at about 5200, my goal was 6000, but I'm not sure I'll hit it..We'll see..
Good job everybody who set goals for themselves and met them!!

Well Joe beat me by a few days. today I passed 5,000 miles for the year (5018), while racing the dolphins and butterflies along the National Seashore. This is my best year ever. Last year I only managed 4,850. I hope you all reach your goals.

it's interesting reading through everyone's mileage, i guess i didn't really have a perspective on mine. i've been feeling like my training fell a little short this year, since i am 2k miles short of my goal right now. but i got hit by a car a month ago, so i've been out on the mountain bike - makes training a little more difficult.
but i got hit by a car a month ago,
YIKES! Hope you are ok!
