this is a repost from lafixed and i'm sure a lot of you don't know mike. hell, even i don't, but mike was hit by a car in late january and got pretty effed up. brain surgery, put on a vent, tracheotomy, can't speak or move, etc. this will be a pretty chill ride with people riding mostly fixed, but it'd be great if some of you LA heads could make it out.
anyway, here are the details for the ride...
Well guys and gals, it's time to put on another benefit ride for one of our own. If you don't already know, Mike V. (mikev703) was in an accident a few months ago. He's slowly but surely recovering and still remains in the hospital going through hours of physical therapy and various other scenarios. Definitely not easy.
This ride is going to be held on Sunday April 6th at 1pm. If you can't make it, you can't make it...we understand. For convenience purposes, the start and end point of this ride will be at the Chinatown Train Station. That's good news for the CM/ OC contingent, as your train stops just a few blocks from there.
For a **recently updated** and detailed map of the route please CLICK HERE (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=104598268458692483951.000447bdc458500317491&ll=34.090199,-118.314257&spn=0.050468,0.079823&z=14). The map has some interactive features to it...just click on the icons on the left hand side.
Like we did for dddddave on the "Save Daves Face" ride, we're going to have tshirts for sale with original artwork from LAFixed's own, Teen Idol. T-shirts will be 20 bucks each and all the money will be going directly to Mike. We're also going to have a raffle in the same spirit as we did on Dave's ride. If you have ANYTHING to donate of ANY value we encourage you to bring it. Raffle tickets will be 2 bucks a ticket.
Hope to see everyone come out for a good cause. Both Colossus and I appreciate it...and Im sure Mike does as well.

dave, I will be donating cash or a raffle prize, TBD. As the date comes closer, I'll PM you, OK? I'm just seeing if I have an item to donate that might be worth more $$$ than the $ I'd be able to PayPal.
Thank you for organizing this while you are still on the mend yourself.

grumpy pig donated a NIB cateye micro wireless. if you donate either cash or a sweet raffle prize i'll be sure to get you a t shirt.

Rats. My lousy In 'n' Out gift card doesn't seem quite so baller now, compared to that Cateye.
But srsly, thanks for the tee offer, dave. If money permits, I'd like to just buy one in addition to whatever donation I shake out of the couch pillows and car cointray.

OK...I got something cool to donate...a DVD of eat!sleep?bikes!, the Sasha Perry film documenting four friends riding the Death Valley Furnace Creek 508 on their fixed gear bikes.
This copy is special, too. It is signed by Megan Dean...:)
I probably won't make it to the ride, but I'd like to send something for the raffle -- maybe some stuff from OneLessCar.com (http://1lesscar.com/) if you think that's appropriate and would rake in more raffle tickets.

03-11-08, 12:12 PM
brian that'd be rad! i know people would be glad to get that stuff. i actually just made a $0.00 0/10 stencil for my bag.
Hey Dave, I just ordered a couple of t-shirts and a set of patches from 1lesscar. They're shipping directly to the address you gave me, so if you can let them know to look out for the stuff, cool. Looks like a fun ride and I'm a sucker for a good cause. I'm going to see what I can do to make time to get out to it.

You should bring that stencil to the benefit ride, and stencil people's stuff for a donation.

dave, make a miniature version of that stencil, bring a Sharpie, and temporary-tattoo it on the side of people's calves.

ty. I dig the 1lesscar products, and an opportunity to support those guys **and** help out a fallen rider is not to be missed.
I must add: I read the whole thread about Mike V on lafixed.com. If I may summarize: Mike was on his way to work -- new job at a bike shop -- when he was right hooked by a driver who ... wait for it ... didn't see him. He wasn't doing anything crazy or breaking any laws; he was commuting to work like lots of us do. As a fixie commuter, it really shook me up to read about it. The positive news is that he's responding to therapy, but he's got a long way to go. The funds raised by the ride go to both medical expenses and helping the family, who have taken lots of time off to assist Mike in his recovery.
Definitely get involved in this one if you can.

wha?
See the eagle/wings next to some of the BF Members avatars? (like mine for instance?)
That means that person made a charitable donation in the name of the late and great Sheldon Brown.
If anyone wants to donate to Mike in the name of Sheldon...as a way to keep Mr. Brown's generous spirit alive...they can do so. Then they can ask Brian for some Sheldon eagle wings...:)
I thought about you guys yesterday...while I was enjoying the beautiful Huntington Gardens.
Looking forward to the ride.

I just saw the map...looks like a nice 15-20ish mile ride. What's the pace going to be? I've never rode with the fixed gear crowd.
I'm looking forward to the gathering; this'll be my first social/group ride. :)

You're going to count that along with "beer"? I don't get it.
Well, my buddy I was going to drag to the ride got nailed by a car on Friday -- he's ok. The bike, that's another story. So I'm flying solo :(
