Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

For those wanting a cheap 1200K, if you are a RUSA member in the US, you can create your own 1200K route and submit it for approval as a permanent. You can then ride the route anytime you like either solo or with other RUSA members. You can make the route start from your house and be multiple loops so you have no motel expenses if you like. Since you are the organizer, you don't have to pay any registration costs. Your only expenses will be for food. RUSA even picks up the cost of insurance.

If you like, you can even design and order up custom medals from any one of the many manufacturers. This may add significantly to your cost, but you'll get to make the medal however you like.

If you live in Canada, you may not have a permanent system available. So, lobby your organization to put one in place. Permanents are wildly popular in the US.

1200K permanents are wildly popular ... or the shorter distances?

Shorter distances, of course. In North Texas, there are people doing 200K permanents every week. The results are entered into the RUSA database and count toward mileage awards.

My point was that a 1200K permanent could be made and ridden with little to no support and at very low cost. And the mileage would be recorded in the RUSA database for mileage awards.

By the way, I believe the RUSA R-12 award was the catalyst for the dramatic increase in permanents designed and ridden in the states.

Award is given for riding a 200+k brevet or perm for 12 consecutive months. It's like the century a month thread.

Excellent idea and superbly implemented.

But ... for the mileage awards, a given permanent can only be counted once. Those Texans sure have a lot of permanents in their area: A total of 102 permanents in the state. As of now, the MD, DC, VA area has ten permanents, with several more applied for.
