Southern California - How Much Did You Pay For Your Road Bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Like to get a poll of how much people have spent on their bikes...

Spent $570 on a $1200 bike. It was 3 years old and the manager wanted it out of the shop.

When they bought it, or after all the modifications? That is a very important distinction. ;)

I've pieced together almost all of my bikes and frequently carry old parts over to the next build, so I'm not sure exactly how much I spent on them total. I'm not sure if I want to add it all up either.

Well I'm inbetween road bikes right now, but my litespeed cost me about $1,750.00, so technically it falls into about seven of the categories.

My Cannondale was $1700 otd when it was on sale at REI. I was looking at road bikes for a few weeks, but was balking at the high price tags ($700+). I'm not sure how I ended up getting the C'dale. I think it was after comparing the MSRP at the LBS and REI's 15% off sales price. :p

$3500 for a bike that comes with ultegra should be illegal.

My current LeMond (a Poprad) ran right around $1600. My Mercier was around... I dunno, whatever the Kilo TT is going for on bikesdirect.com. My DEAN was an upgrade of a Trek 1000 that was upgraded, so I have no idea. :)

$40 for the C'dale R400 frame (downtube shifters), thanks Craigslist. Still using my Mavic ModE rims/Miche hub setup from my early 80's college days. $15 for the Sella Italia Gel seat.

Oh and a free front wheel (Campy hub, Matrix aero rim) from my buddy, Sky!

Can anyone beat that cheapness?

Just over $2,000, which is technically less than $3,000.

$1200 out the door and a little grief from the Mrs.'s. Glad thats over. If I had to do it over probably around $2500 and lots of short time grief.

A little over a thousand plus some bits from my crashed steel steed, so that's "under $2000"

It's not about the bike it's about the MOTOR!

Haha. I told my wife I probably would have been better off if I took the credit card down to a shop and bought my dream bike for one good round of complaints than all the complaints from her every time I upgrade a part that I cheaped out on trying to appease her in the first place.

Oh yeah, and this poll should be useful if I want to negotiate a budget next time... if the thread is still here in 50 years.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e400/jains89/53400149.jpgI saw a bike just like yours last week on Hungtington Drive in San Marino. It's so beautiful & I tried to follow it to take a closer & longer look. It's just at the last second that I paid attention to the rider & it was a lady riding it, then I realized my interest & priority has changed from woman to bike:o

Current bike, $1,900. Build on order, probably around $2200, depending on if I can pick up a team toupe saddle with the right color combination on ebay, and which wheels I end up getting.

'85 De Rosa, Super Record (original), Cinelli bar & stem, Mavic SSC laced to Araya aero rims, plus:

Roval racing wheels original bladed spokes
Yakima rooftop rack
3 suntour WinnerPro freewheels (13-24, 12-19, 12-22)
Silca frame pump
Zefal HPx4 frame pump,
stand pump,
CO2 inflator + 5 cylinders
saddle bag
assorted cycling clothes (clean!)
I bet I'm forgetting something

I consider the check I wrote to be for the parts; the De Rosa I consider a gift, with the promise to care for and ride her. 5k miles in 1-1/2 years and three Century rides later I think I'm keeping my end of the bargain!

Bought my NOS 1994 Bottecchia frame and built it up with a Campy Athena gruppo in 2000. About $2200-$2300 in all
