Bicycle Mechanics - Front gear shifter gets stuck when switching up a gear

It seems I encountered an odd problem.

When switching my front gear up, the lever thing gets stuck in the position just as it 'clicks' into the new gear. I can move it back with my thumb, but still, I do not think that this is normal.

Do you guys have any suggestions as to the reason for this? Thanks!

What kind of shifters? If they are STI's, the cable could be frayed inside of the housing and snagging. If this is the problem the best fix can be found at

Try cleaning your derailure really well. There could be some grit causing the derailure to hang up. Lubricate your derailure. THere is probably some official derailure lubricant, but I just use chain lube.

Check your cable and make sure it is not frayed inside the cable housing. Clean your cable, lube the cable inside the housing with grease. IF YOU HAVE CABLES WITH AN INTERNAL SLEEVE BETWEEN THE CABLE AND THE HOUSING, THEN DO NOT LUBRICATE.

Is it a (older) Shimano Rapidfire-style shifter? Sometimes the grease in them hardens, and the pawls inside that actuate the indexing freeze up, causing problems like yours. If the other suggestions don't work (which should be done anyhow, it's good mainainence), try shooting a light lube such as T9 or triflow into the shifter.

i would drop them in degreaser for 20 minutes to an hour, then lube.
