Northern California - My hybrid was stolen today

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Well, I have to admit, it wasn't in the most secure of places. Unfortunately a downside of having a small apartment with no garage.
It was hanging upside down from hooks in my carport roof. I could never reach to lock the bike to the structure so I just used a cable lock to lock the wheels to the frame. I've kept it that way for about 2 years.
So anybody could lift it down and take it away and use bolt cutters or a hacksaw at their own leisure.
However it is quite a safe neighborhood in general, everybody else leaves their bikes the same way (although most don't bother with locks). The other bikes were ok, even my boyfriend's MTB which was right next to mine.
BTW the Orbea is kept safely inside the apartment.
BTW the Orbea is kept safely inside the apartment.Well that's a relief. Gotta have priorities! Orbeas sleep at the foot of the bed, no ifs ands or buts!

Sorry to here your bike stolen, if you have the serial numbers post it were ever you can as stolen you never know, the sad part is some idiot will strip it and sell it for pennies when it was much more than that to you!. It was most likely someone in the area make some fliers and talk to some of the local kids you might get lucky.
Register it here worth a shot.

Oh damn ... Sorry to hear that, Paula. That really sucks. I had my mountain bike stolen in a fairly safe place (downtown Mountain View), and it was even locked.

Damn! Paula Sorry to hear :( I hope you get it back... That really sucks.
A few years back, I used to live pretty close to where you live now (in Foster City) on Rock Harbor Ln (around Port Royal/Beach Park area).
I used to have my bike locked to the post of the stairway up to the apt entry.
I locked it with a Master Lock Street Cuffs lock around the frame/rear wheel and a cable around the frame, front wheel, and post again.
Well I came out one day to find the cable cut through like butter, but just a couple of nicks on the Street Cuffs.
This was also a nice neighborhood, not exposed to the street or anything.
If you get another commuter, that's not a folder, lock it to something no matter what.
Although, I think this would be a cool new commuter for you (Full size crazy Cannondale folder):

Oh man! That's just wrong.
Sorry to hear about the bad news. I despise people that resort to this sort of behavior.

On the positive side, if it gets you closer to a folder...:beer:

Sorry to hear the bad news... :(
I'll keep an eye out on CL since I cruise it once in a while.

Wow what a bummer to have your bike stolen from your place, by chance do you have renters insurance? If so then check with them to see if they will replace your bike...
I put on both of my bikes on my renters insurance just incase some thing tragic happened to both of them. Now that I’m in my house I have them under my home owners insurance.
I hope you're able to recover your bike.

Ugh! Let's legalize drugs already!!! Geez! This sucks! I'm sorry to hear this.
I'll keep my eyes peeled on craigs here in Sacramento too. What are the components in the event that someone tries piecing it out (?). You probably have a much higher chance of recovery since you have the equivalent of an Amber Alert posting it here (us BF goons). I have hope.

Thats a really ugly thing to happen. Sorry for your loss. :(
There has been a slew of breaking in and theft lately. Just a couple of weeks ago my next door neighbor got broken into. And we are in a pretty "quite" and "safe" neighborhood too. Or so we thought.
Don't be complacent out there, everyone. With the economy taking a huge dive and more and more people having trouble making ends meet, its better safe than sorry.
Unfortunately, I would imagine that the chances of getting it back are even slimmer than the chances of the police caring (I'm picturing Chief Wiggum sarcastically taking down the report on his invisible typewriter). It's a shame, too, because it looks like it was a nice bike. I like the styling and utility of a good road-tired 26" hybridy/mountainy bike. I had one (http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/7373/img0593pu3.jpg) at one point, and it served me well. (It's been converted back to a mountain bike since.)
It's always a strange, offputting feeling to have something stolen, and I'm sorry you're having to go through it. I kind of feel bad for joking about it last weekend. :p
And hey, if you do replace it with a nice folder, just think how easy it'll be to lock up. Fold the thing up, and lock both wheels and the frame with one U-lock. Or just bring it in the house, I guess.

Sorry to hear Paula. Where were those places that the green recumbent ended up at?
If you decide to let it go, the Dahon Jack (http://www.dahon.com/intl/jack.htm) is a cool full-sized folder.
Or you could build a fixed gear.
And if you want to keep both bikes inside, look into the gravity type racks. They save a bit of space.

Major suckage, sorry to hear about this. Seems like such a nice neighborhood. I think feeling violated at the homestead is worse than if something were stolen from you on a trip.
Well I'll always have the memory of you beating my ass up Page Mill Road on that beast!
BTW, I recently discovered something that you might consider as an alternative to those weenie little circus clown http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f155/tacksharp/smilie_bozo.gif folders: a standard road bike that you can pack for traveling by taking apart the frame into two pieces:

A standard bike might make a better commuter than a folder? I'm assuming you don't want to commute with the Orbea.
Unfortunately, I would imagine that the chances of getting it back are even slimmer than the chances of the police caring (I'm picturing Chief Wiggum sarcastically taking down the report on his invisible typewriter).
Actually Foster City has virtually no crime; I can see the FC police taping off the crime scene to investigate this. "OK, let's dust everything for prints. We'll get these perps!"

Yep, I've resigned myself to this. I may try with my renters insurance to see if I can get anything out of it, good tip, thanks for the reminder O_o.
Ah, Chief Wiggum. My favorite quote:
"Put out an APB for a male suspect, driving a... car of some sort, heading in the direction of, uh, you know, that place that sells chili. Suspect is hatless. Repeat, hatless."

If I'm commuting to the office where I can bring the bike inside, the Orbea is ok, actually. I just don't really want to have to lock it up outside, for example when I go to Stanford or running errands at the store.
Also thanks everyone for the replacement bike suggestions. So many options to look at! I get to go bike shopping now, that's the upside, right? :)

My friend has had three of his commuting road bikes stolen (all locked to bike racks). I offered to give him one of my old bikes (as we ride the same size frame), but he declined...saying that it might be stolen. These days, I don't leave sight of my two custom Ti road bikes. When I need to park the bike somewhere, I take my 1990 Schwinn MTB.

Chief Wiggum is my hero. Probably a bad thing, but I choose to ignore that.
The suggestion of a bike with S&S couplers is a good one. Surly recently came out with the Travelers Check (http://surlybikes.com/travelerscheck.html), which I think is basically a Cross Check with preinstalled S&S couplers. You could make a fun bike out of that. Ritchey's Break-Away (https://ritcheylogic.com/web/Ritchey~Logic/Ritchey~Site/web/EN/main/20789.html) line of bikes looks interesting, as well. Same kind of concept, but with their own system. Neither would be as small or quick to assemble as a folder, of course, but it's another option.
I get to go bike shopping now, that's the upside, right? :)Absolutely! :D

Sorry to hear about the bike Paula. Get the insurance payoff. Tell em you got it locked up good and they got it anyway. You gotta prove that you were reasonably protected.

That is soooo sucky. I had a bike stolen from my garage 10 years ago and I STILL find myself checking out bike racks just in case...
I'm not a right wing guy, but I think the death penalty might be OK for just this one crime. Kinda like in the old west when someone steals a horse.

Yea, that happened to me 15 years ago. Bike was hung from the ceiling, and I opened the garage door. Went inside for awhile, then came out, and it was gone. I guess the moral of this story is you can never be too safe.

Aww sorry about the loss of your beautiful bike, Ms I. :(
I'll try to keep an eye out for it on CL. If somehow the bad guy gets found, you make sure to tell us, because you know you've got your posse RIGHT here. Right, guys?? ;)

Definitely. Whoever stole it is the scum of the earth. Having gotten my mtn bike stolen in downtown Mtn View, I know exactly how that feels. That was a long walk home.
