Southern California - Camera Ride, Sat. 3/8

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I would be doing the PHO RIDE (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=393518) tomorrow if I hadn't committed myself earlier to doing the CAMERA RIDE (http://forums.roadbikereview.com/showthread.php?t=123129).
This is a social ride involving lots of picture taking and a couple of stops for food and desert, centering around areas just north of downtown LA. We meet at Union Station at noon. This ride is organized by members of Roadbikereview.com. A couple of BF'ers, besides myself, are participating.
You must bring a camera, film or digital, pro or consumer, working or not, doesn't matter. This is a camera ride.
Oh, and we're having mochi ice cream in Little Tokyo too.
Anyone with a camera is welcomed to join. :D

Have fun, George, and, of course, we'll expect pictures! ;)
Sadly, I can't ride this. Nor, ME, can I ride the pho ride. My family, it seems, has other plans what with it being my birthday and all.

I'm going to be out really late tonight, but if I have any energy tomorrow I might join you...:p

I think we're stopping for some shrimp cocktail at La Serenata. That's pretty close to your hood, no? Join us if you can.

Slight change of plan according to the people from RBR. Instead of a sit down meal, we'll be 'hummingbirding' throughout the ride. :D

We had some fun times yesterday. When I'm not doing RAAM, quadruple centuries, and brevets, I sometimes love to do these artsy rides where you spend more time off the bike than on the bike. :D Seriously, I love these kind of rides.
There were 8 of us with bikes and camera equipment, several nice vintage film equipment too. Grrlyrida and Hollywould from Bikeforums were part of the group too.
We met at Union Station at noon and strolled parts of downtown and had lunch at Lost Souls in downtown. Then we headed to the Bradbury Building, then to Our Lady of Angels Cathedral, and then over to Angelino Heights. I had to get home so I branched off after shooting some pictures in Angelino Heights. And since Grrlyrida lives in Silverlake, she did the same. The rest of the group headed back towards downtown to continue on with the remainder of the tour.
I took a bunch of pictures and here are just a few:

Oh rats! That looks like it was a lot of fun! Too bad I couldn't make it. Who had the xtracycle?
Here are some pictures (http://imageevent.com/production/cycling/ridearctrolly3708) from the ride that kept me out too late to join you the next day. It was a very "smart" ride...about 100 riders.
That is me in picture number three. I'm the top woman in screaming yellow. Extra bonus points for anyone who can tell me who is standing next to me...(the other woman in yellow) In fact, I will buy the winner a scoop at Scoops...:)

I believe they're part of the period prop they plant for that neighborhood with all the Victorian homes. They kept circling around the block, holding hands and skipping too. I have several other shots of them next to my bike. Either that or they really dug me so they kept coming back. :D

We all had some sort of point and shoot digicam, including a couple of nice DSLR's. In addition, some brought their 35mm and medium format cameras.......I saw 35mm and 120 Russian cameras, a twin lens Rolliflex, 645 Fuji, & etc.. ...A photo fieldtrip out of the 70's. Very cool. :D

Why doesn't someone come up with a line of affordable digital backs for classic cameras?

Why doesn't someone come up with a line of affordable digital backs for classic cameras? They weren't affordable but digital backs were available for a few medium formats. I think they kind of threw off the focal lengths also.
Speaking of backs I once had a polaroid back for my F body. I don't exactly remember why I had one.

time to visit the desert
time to visit the desert
Here's what it is. I've wanted a telescope all my life and my daughter always enjoyed going out and looking at the stars and me telling her what little I knew about them. So I broke down and bought an ok ETX 125 Meade and was very underwhelmed and Sarah was bored to tears. Now it was cool seeing Jupiter and Saturn, but the prospect of looking at them for hours and hours was utterly daunting. Going out to the desert would only increase the time of boredom spent on it. Finally I broke down and admitted that I made a mistake in buying it.:o:(

I have a learn astronomy in 30 (non-consecutive) days book. May help with the boredom part if you throw in some Greek mythology into it.

To truly enjoy the night sky you need a large aperture scope to be able to see beyond our solar system. It also requires a lot of time commitment as you need to travel to dark sites, often spending the entire evening there and having to drive back the next morning. Backyard astronomy under light poluted skies suck, regardless of equipment used.
Best thing to do is to visit large star parties on new moon weekends. We used to head up to Mount Pinos up in Frazier Park and spend Saturday nights there amongst many amateur astronomers. On a good night you might see over well 100 scopes of all shapes and sizes.
You'll be amazed by what you'll be able to see through some of the scopes there. Most people camp in their vehicles. It could turn out to be a fun evening for visitors.

I'm sure it would be fun, but I've turned into a big baby in my old age, I want to sleep in my own bed and my tummy gets upset if I'm up to late.:) Plus, I just can't sit still that long.
