My Surly cog is loud as hell and still hasn't quieted down after some riding. I think it's just the way the teeth are cut, it's very angular and square instead of tapered (more like the EAI design).

i have one of the old ones as well as one of the new ones w/ the drillium effect and they are both nice and quiet. were you using the current chain w/ another cog before you put the surly on?
My Surly cog is always loud with a new chain, then it pipes down nicely after 300 km or so.
mine was quiet until i put it on the hub and rode it

Thats a relief to hear. I was kind of worried because I swapped out to a new chain yesterday and it still was loud/stuck to the chain.

Yeah, what he said.
Both of mine are very quiet.

never have heard a peep from mine, even when i put it together new chain+new cog = happy
but it does make sense that a new chain or new cog would make a little noise for the first few good miles.
Gotta wear down those sharp edges and high points.

No noise out of mine, either when it was new with a new chain and as it ages.

Pretty much silent here (1/8"), and I've usually run with really crappy chainlines to boot. I think it's pretty subjective to your entire setup.

Mine is loud as hell too. My chain and cog have been through 500+ miles together. Maybe it depends on the chains, or chain/cog size?

it's probably the chain. I noticed this when I switched one out for another and it instantly became quiet.

take off your lockring and cog, check the threads, clean and re-grease everything, put the cog on as tight as you can (use the rotafix method making sure you put a rag on the BB so you don't scratch it), then put on lockring.

whats rotafix method? would chainwhip method work as well as this?
edit: nvm i got this rotafix method....but im not sure if i should use this... looks risky lol

I actually hear cricket noises when I ride. :D ;)
Seriously, I hear a constant sound, but not really loud... but does get about twice as loud when I apply back pressure. I've never ridden another setup, so nothing to compare to.

yea rotafix is for if you don't have a chainwhip. I've used it plenty but if you don't like the looks of it just use the whip

Rotafix is superior to using the whip in almost all cases.

The drawback to rotafixing is that you're more likely to damage the frame and/or the paint, and unless you're the Skidmaster General, the cog is probably going to be tighter than it needs to be.

When rotafixing, you don't have to torque it as hard as you can.

Mine is quiet now that I have decent chainline.

Sure you aren't using a 3/32nd chain on a 1/8th cog?

Man, I'm glad I just found this thread. I switched back to my 17t cog from my 19t cog, both Surly, and I thought I was losing my mind! Regardless of the chain, the 17t is always louder. The 19t cog is whisper quiet.

thank you so much, thats now my custom title... also rotafix method is superior to the whip or just mashing the pedals up a hill because of the added leverage
