Hey guys, I nearly did it last year but this year I have decided I am going to start commuting to work. I have a question for any local SLC'ites. What streets would you recommend to ride on? I live about 45th south and 13th east and work downtown. I know 7th has a bike lane but I'm a little hesitant to ride on such a busy road. So I was wondering if there are any other roads you would recommend? Thanks

What time do you commute? I like 3rd East. There's a bike lane there, and it's narrow, and traffic isn't as intense. But getting there may create more problems than it solves, depending on the time of day, because 33rd and 45th are really busy unbikefriendly streets. I just try to stay away from 7th and 9th when traffic is really kicking. Google Map it, and see if it would work for you.
You could try 5th East too. Depending on exactly where you live, you might be able to go north on 11th East and jog over somewhere south of Sugar House. 5th East is pretty calm - but nothing could be completely stress-free during the morning commute downtown. 5th is a pretty clear shot beyond Sugarhouse. I agree with Aloyzius - 7th and 9th East are insane.

When I go down town, I cross over on 45th to 5th east. 13th to 5th on 45th is the worst spot, and it's really not that bad. Like Aloyzius said, 3rd is fairly calm, avoid 7th and 9th. Try both 3rd and 5th, decide which you like best. Enjoy the ride!

Thanks, I usually commute in the morning aroung 6:30 and leave at 3:30-ish. Friday, I thought I'd try and map it out and think I'm going to try 5th east and traffic didn't seem too bad, and this morning I thought I'd drive 5th east into work and it wasn't that bad either. I didn't know about 3rd east. I might have to try that.

I live not too far from you, donkiluminate, and used to make the commute downtown. Here's what I'd do: Assuming you're starting at 45th and 13th, go West on 45th to 11th East, then North on 11th East through 39th and 33rd South. Keep going north on 11th East up a small hill, then take the first left (there's an old house on the corner on your left). Down the hill, right at the "T" onto 10th East, then go north to Elgin (just before the "Dead End" sign), left onto Elgin to 9th East. North on 9th East (it's busy, but only two lanes so there's usually enough room). Go under I-80 but take the first left onto Ashton, immediately after you go under the freeway. Go west to 8th East, then you can go north as far as you want on 8th East. I used to go West on 8th South to 3rd East then north.
Sorry, this is a pretty lengthy, circuitous description and might not be your cup of tea, but it's the best route I found, mostly because it keeps you off the busy streets and 8th East in the morning is pretty pleasant. The worst part is trying to get across 21st South, since there's no light at 21st and 8th East, and sometimes 17th South could take a minute. Hope the commute works well for you.

I used to live on 35th and 13th. I always preferred riding up the hill to 20th East to go under the freeway, then around Sugarhouse Park to 15th E and on in to town then down Sunnyside.
