Had to take the dog to the vet and then in-laws today, and all along the 101 freeway and 118 were cars carrying road bikes towards Solvang. Just jealous, that's all.

Rides like that always yield the most photos and reports, though... so we have that to look forward to. :)
Hi,
No Solvang for me. In fact, I've never done that ride. Heading to Murrieta tomorrow for the crit.

I no longer have jealous feelings of organized riders. I guess doing my first in 94 kinda makes me think that I've had my share. Matter of fact, sometimes I'll drive down to a ride and help out with support, unofficially. I've driven rides such as 'Ride Around the Bear' with tools and fluids. Amazing how many riders you can help eventhough You're not part of the ride. Amazing how many are unprepared when it comes to supplies. Still have fun doing stuff like this!:D

Vance, good point. Looking forward to the pics. I'll be doing Montrose tomorrow to snap my legs into shape for the LA circuit Race.

But...but...that's perfect cycling weather! For me, anyway. I feel less disgusting and sweaty when I cycle in 55 and below temps.

Jealous...funny.
I can't say that I have a jealous bone in my body. Other worrisome defects of character perhaps, but not that particular one. :)
As far as organized group rides like that for some reason they have never appealed to my imagination. Much the same way I went to Alaska by throwing my sleeping bag on the deck of a ferry headed up the inland passage rather than taking a cruise or booking an adventure package...
But I can see the appeal for others. Structured, supported group rides on a well-thought out route offer a margin of safety, perhaps, that taking off by yourself or with a couple of others doesn't. Lord knows we as cyclists need all the help we can get in that area.
Also there is the excitement generated by a large group of people on bikes...critical mass...and the sense of community that fosters.
Then there is just the social aspect for people looking to rack up high mileage. It does help the miles pass to have interesting friends along, to chat with, maybe even compete with a bit. Pretty scenery to look at...

^ Woohoo! I'd post the pics from the 1992 one, but all we have are the proofs. We didn't buy prints.

That's right old timer. (Saying this right after plucking a gay sideburn hair)

True, I forgot to mention I did the 1992 Prelude, not the century. But even that was more than 8 miles.

That's a Specialized Allez, cro-mo steel with Shimano 600 circa 1987. I brought it out of retirement 5 or 6 years ago to get away from the stress of the divorce I was going through and became hooked on riding again. I moved on to my Specialized Roubaix Pro, but it's still on the road, my sisters boyfriend is now riding it faster than I can.

ONLY my sideburns and eyebrows, and just a few stray hairs at that. My forehead is a lot larger than it was 10 years ago, though. I can't tell you how many times I sunburned the top 1/2" because I'm not used to applying sunblock that high up. :D

My son told me that one of his friends was out of town this weekend because his dad was doing the Solving century. When I heard that, I was jealous too!
