I'm overhauling the shifting on my Santana (tandem), and have run into a small problem.

I'm replacing an older (3 or 4 years) Ultegra front derailleur, with a new triple ultegra front (6603).

The probelm is that the old ultegra front derailleur was a "shallow cage" design. The new one is a "deep cage" design (which seem more proper for a triple) My bike has a dog tooth installed, which interferes with the deeper cage on the new derailleur. I've removed it (the dog tooth) for now, on the theory that with the deep cage design, it is less important; but I wonder am I doing the right thing here.

Will proper adjustment of the deep cage derailleur mitigate the need for a dog tooth?

Dropping the chain on a tandem can be socially difficult.

File it off and, if you're concerned about dropping the chain, replace it with a Third Eye Chain Watcher or a Deda Dog Fang. They work better anyways.

Be aware that the 6603 is designed for a 39 tooth middle ring and will hit a 42 tooth ring on a 30/42/52. - TF
