"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Race report: I get there with enough time to pin my number and line up

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

We take a wrong turn, wind up 40 miles out of the way. We get to the race this afternoon with 15 minutes to spare. When I get out of my car sleet is coming down. We pee, register, pin our numbers and line up freezing our baggets off. I was so ticked from getting there late I forget to eat and didn't put but one bottle on my bike - and one clif bar in my jersey.

The race is 6 laps with a nasty hill to the finish.

1st lap 5 people are dropped, including my team mate. I'm hanging on the rear of the lead pack.

2nd lap more people are dropped on the climb. I'm getting hungry and light headed.

3rd lap I find my food and eat but start running out of fluid. I also peer down for but a second, look up and the group comes to a crawl. I cross my front wheel with someone's rear wheel, swerve to the left, unclip, barrel off the road, clip back in, bunny hop the curb, and sprint to the pack. NOW THE ADRENALINE IS FLOWING, BABY!

4th lap over 20 people total are dropped on the race at this point. I'm still hanging on and still feel light headed from lack of food.

LAST LAP. No great attacks. thank God. We have 20+ people left and I'm still hanging on. We get to the climb and I think, quit hanging on and do something, you idiot. I do something, I stand on it hard and weave through the crowd. I must have passed over 10 riders.

200m I pass more.

100m I'm almost puking.

Finish - I get 6th and a 10 dollar check. I'm stoked!! :)

mo money mo money - oh and mo points mo points. ;)

I was the only stupid one out there, crossing a wheel. I think the weather and wet roads had everyone acting cautiously.

Yes

The 3s start at 1:50pm and the 4s start at 9:35am. If you happen to see the dude in the avatar after your race, come say hi.

Carry your bike like that, with your tongue out. I'll know it's you. ;)

I'll look for you. Keep an eye out for me.

Nice work. Too many racers just throw up their hands with a backpack full of excuses like you had available. It's frigging bike race, you HTFU and got it on!

No quit in that effort. You were provided several opportunities to find an excuse. Instead at the end you decided you haven't reached the edge and raced for it. Very Nice!

I do like the mental insight. I always think I'm the only one thinking those thoughts. :) You're having some good races lately, congrats!

Thanks guys for all the kind words. I'm racing again this morning. Someone else is driving. We should be on time to warm up, eat, and register.

I wonder if I will attack last last Sunday? HHhhhmmmmmmm?

Had a race like that last year. Hard to find race and wrong turns. Got to the line and less than minute later your moving.
