View Full Version : The Real SS/FG riders

With all this talk and threads about hipsters, poseurs and jackass fixies of the day, I wondered if there were any "real" people that rode at all. I ride a roadie most of the time and am quite aware of all the poseurs in that genre. In this forum, we've devoted thousands of pages to wanna-be riders but scant little attention to the real riders.

I did find a few pics of what appear to be legitimate SS/FG riders.

But then, Google serves up this one:

WTF?

And this one?

Sorry, but the leaning guy appears to have a double front crank and brifters

Also look at the position of the chain coming off the bottom of the chainring.

good work, broseph.

i fail to see how those riders are any more legit than a lot of other riders

well that last pic was a FG/SS poster on BF from back in the day so, that would a real rider that you couldn't figure out.

maybe for some its a hobby/lifestyle and not a fashion sense so that makes them harder to identify

I love what you say.

I wonder if anyone else thinks that the OP is so obviously a troll that it is deceiving.

I use the ImageZoom extension for Firefox to fix the obnoxiously large images that pop up here on the forums. After you install it, you can resize and zoom in/out of any image easily. Just hold the right mouse button down with the cursor over the image and press the left mouse button to make the image fit the browser window, scroll with the wheel to zoom in/out in small increments or click the middle button to restore the image to the original size.

2004 or 2005 Virginia Beach ocean front.

If I can find my pair I'm going to do a revised picture when my new frame is built

I am in slightly better shape now

Do you actually ride (outside your apartment I mean) wearing them? Mad props to you if you do, man! I don't know if I could. Maybe I'm not so hot.

No, I would have had to buy briefs to do so (XS soffee shorts are easy to fall out of).

We had a bunch of kids who would ride in speedos around atlanta. It got really annoying.

I'm definitely not a real fixed gear rider. Because I'm a cycle bum. But mostly because I don't ride fixed gear.

I guess real riders are ones who know how to ride competently, like to go fast and have a lot of heart for the game. Doesn't need to get more complicated then that, right? It could be a roadie, hipster, messenger, track star, whatever.

I'll second that. Mr "Puke on yer Lexus" now rides the track as well. (wish I'd knew it was him)
BTW you probably don't get more "real" FG rider than trackie;) (that's my sarcastic voice)

It seems like the whole idea of real vs. fake fixed gear riders is a pissing match to see who is the most into the whole bit, and my question is does it really matter? I mean, if you actually, physically, ride on a bike with a fixed gear, you are un-arguably a fixed gear rider, end of story.

There was an article on Sheldon's website last year about some riders who did PBP on fixed gears. I remember reading an article in the Rivendell Reader about a guy who did a tour across Nevada in the winter on a four-speed fixed gear. And the guy who did RAAM on a single speed.

Hardest of the hard core.

Couldn't disagree more. Old timers, utility cyclists, tourists, commuters, car free-ers are just as real as those who "like to go fast and have a lot of heart for the game." As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing more real than getting on your bike even though it's cold/windy/snowing/whatever because you've got to get to work or the grocery store.

If you ride, you're a real rider.
