Hi,
I'm having a little bit of trouble. I installed my IRD Tange 1-1/8" thread less headset cups about a week ago on a build I'm doing (brand new frame). I did it myself with the washer bolt method. Now I'm putting my fork on, and everything fits fine, but when I try and adjust the tension in the top with the star nut and bolt I have a problem( I should add I had the LBS install my star nut for me to make sure it's straight). I can't seem to find a happy medium, the fork is either too loose and I have play, or it's too tight and the headset seems to have pinching. I can't really see any gap in between the cups and the head tube, but there might be a minute one if any. What kind of troubleshooting should I do? I was thinking that I maybe should put the home made headset tool back on and try and make it a bit tighter to see if I can't get rid of any gap if there is any, but I wanted to ask to make sure first.
I appreciate any and all suggestions. Thanks

If you can see a gap large enough to slip a piece of paper into, you'll need to press again. Did you have the headtube faced?

Okay. I'll give it another shot. The headtube was fresh and clean so I don't think that's the problem. looking at it now I think I definitely see a gap. Thanks

sounds to me like you have the bearings in the retainer upside down.

The two faces of the head tube might not be paralell to each other. This was the case one one of a friends bikes. Had them sufraced and perfect fit.
