Bicycle Mechanics - Dent in handlebar - should I worry?
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have an old handlebar that I was hoping to use on my Surly Cross Check. When I removed it from the stem it was in, I noticed a dent in the clamping area. Do you think it might be dangerous?
It seems to be about 0.5 mm/0.2 inch deep.
A dent you should worry about. Bars are under a lot of stress and I hate to imagine one breaking at the wrong time. Many manufacturers say that we are to consider them "consumables', which is to say they should be replaced sooner rather than later. Personally, I think that as long as the bar is not bent, the aluminum should still be sound enough to trust.
What you have there is a scratch. And a scratch in a good place. It is under the clamp, and so it is not under any particular stress.
OK, thanks, Jim.
I would have thought it's too deep to qualify as a scratch, which to me implies something superficial (but English is not my native language).
