The shifter works fine but rattles when the bike is shaken. Any ideas?

i'll bet you all the money i have it's the little plastic cap that says "105" on it. both of mine did that, and both are now gone. they'll eventually just fall off. annoying and unsightly, but hasn't affected performance any.

On my Ultegra I had a similar problem. What I found was that the brake cable had "fouled" somehow. This was causing the cable to not fully retract. Changed it out and the rattle was gone.

I had experience on those old 105 STIs after a minor crash. The inside of the cap chipped/broke and was trapped inside the lever. IF you shake it it would rattle. Had to replace the cap and remove the chipped part by dismantling the lever.
I have new STIs now, and I try not to break those fragile caps ;) .

Check with your LBS. I think there is a tech bullitain on this problem that can be fixed with a turn of a screw and some thread sealer.
