Cyclists and art lovers alike will enjoy this relaxing and engaging bike tour of Pasadena's large collection of art galleries and museums, all open for free for this evening on Fri., March 14, 2008.

This event only happens twice a year... you won't want to miss it!!

The Pasadena Art Ride is a fun social event that is open to all skill levels. The pace is relaxed and easy, and beginning bicyclists should feel free to join the ride. Ample time has been arranged to visit each location. Supervised parking is available, however each rider is asked to bring his or her own bicycle lock.

What to Bring:

A bicycle in good running order, lights for night riding, a bike lock. All participants under 18 must wear a helmet. Children under age 9 should be on a tag-a-long, bike trailer, tandem, or other safe child-carrying device.

Bicyclists take up pedaling art

ACCORDING to Josef Bray-Ali, "You haven't lived until you've seen a 35-year-old mother beating down a burning piñata."

And he should know. For the last two years, Bray-Ali (who runs Bike Oven, a repair shop/art gallery) has conducted Spoke(n) Art, a biking tour of Northeast L.A.'s art galleries. Largely conceived as an exercise in fun -- think after-parties with flaming piñatas -- Spoke(n) Art regularly attracts eclectic groups of 60 to 70 people every month. But it's far from the only cycling gallery tour to be gathering speed. Somehow, it seems, bikes and art just go together.

"Bikes can go where cars can't take you," says Alex Amerri. A recent Sci-Arc grad, Amerri created RIDE-Arc with some schoolmates in July 2005. Designed with advanced riders in mind, RIDE-Arc follows the architecture -- distances and exotic locales (Watts at night!) be damned. Thoroughly researched, and featuring expert speakers (from halfway house residents to academics) and unique themes (e.g., "The Sex Ride," "As Seen on TV"), Amerri's tours attract around 100 people every time. "It's really a dialogue about how all these design elements are related," he says. On a bicycle, these connections become apparent: "You're constantly being stimulated by everything around you."

Whole cities are getting in on the action. Next week, Shay Sanchez and Liz Elliott are reprising Pasadena ArtRide, a five-gallery sampler of Pasadena ArtNight, the biannual extravaganza featuring the city's many theaters, museums and galleries. The duo -- co-directors of Cyclists Inciting Change thru Live Exchange, or C.I.C.L.E. -- have made a point of designing a scenic, leisurely paced itinerary. Putting people on bikes, they've found, freed strangers up to mingle. "Cycling is about engagement," says Elliott. "Art does something to you emotionally, it enlivens you, wakes you up. And that's what this ride does."

And participants can take that engagement to whatever level they'd like. "Last month I rode in [to Spoke(n) Art] on a rickshaw with sound bending equipment," says Bray-Ali. "We're part of the art show."

I mean , you do have to walk through the museums and look at the art...but we park the bikes right near by and guard them...

I should have been more clear. I meant to ask if the walking is little enough to do on cleated road shoes or if I should bring something to change into, or cleat covers... or if I can ride the bike through the museum and track stand at each exhibit.

She doesn't even have a bike and she is not interested in riding anywhere the distances that we do, but she has been warming up to the idea of getting a tandem after we rented one in Santa Barbara.

I think I'm going to be lazy and just use the cleated shoes...I can't stand carrying around extra shoes and other stuff. :(

Awesome, thanks for the info Alice! A colleague of mine was at the Norton Simon - Maillol opening and she commented that the statues are exquisite. This should be a good.

As we depart One Colorado on Union, we will be taking an immediate

so how was it?

I was exhausted after work, so i opted to do a nerdy night, which resulted in going out for food and bookstore. wow. i did get a flannery o'connor book though, so it wasn't that big of a waste. I also ranted about ****ty art in the magazine section. :)

Allow me to live vicariously and post some photos or some comments at least!

Hey the ride went really well! Lots of positive feedback and no mishaps. About 75 riders I would say...

There was a photographer from the Pasadena City College paper who rode with us the whole way. I'll post some of her pix (or a link at least) once I get them.

Thanks again to Tom Bunn who was a great asset...

I totally flaked on this ride... *hangs head in shame*
