Fellow Cydes,
I did my first century this weekend. Actually, it was 101 miles. The ride was the Wheels of Fire in Georgia. I understand that this ride has approximately 8K feet of climbing through the ride. If that wasnt enough, the ride started out in a snow storm! I am not kidding either. Snow, sleet and rain. I had just started when my bike bag broke and fell off my bike. The plastic that held it to my seat froze and broke. About five mile further and in the blowing snow, I had a flat tire. The back one. Not a good way to start out a ride.
I have never seen so many hills on a bike ride. There were several the last 5 miles of the ride. Anyway, I can say that I have now done a century!

Nice! That is an awesome accomplishment! Congratulations! My goal is to have my first century be the Tour de Steamboat (http://www.rockypeakproductions.com/Tour%20de%20Steamboat%20site/route.html) at the end of this summer...

thanks everyone! I am glad that it is done.....now whats next??? 200k?
Great job Steve! You always seem to remember your first century and what a first century. Not only did you have to ride 101 miles with 8K of climbing (a good days ride) but you had elements. The elements made the ride just that tougher. Again, GREAT JOB!!!!!

Nice going! That's a heck of a lot of climbing for a first century, too.

Wow... you had quite some obstacles to overcome in your first century. Nice work!
Feels great to have accomplished such a ride, doesn't it?
Is it spring yet?

Way to go!!! I'd love to hear more about how you trained, how you felt throughout the ride, what you'd do the same, and what you'd do differently in the future... (training for my first century and love to hear what works and doesn't for other folks!)
Wow! Way to go. I hope to do a half century by June 1 and a century by the end of August.

WOW! Can't get much tougher than that. Great job!
All these adverse elements on the 1st century surely mean good luck for at least the next 10 centuries!!!
Congratulations!
Tall Steve, Do you mind sharing your nutrition and water intake for the day?

Lets see...the first question was about my training. I have to say that I kept riding through the winter. I also bought a Kinetic Rock and Roll trainer. I love that thing! I also bought several Spinerval CDs. One in particular really helped me out. That was the climbing training CD. It says something about climbing like a billy goat. Well...I am not quite at that point, but hills are much easier now. I was riding my trainer three times a week for 30 minutes each ride. I always did a spinerval CD. If I was lucky enough to ride on the weekend, then I left off the Friday trainer.
The second question was about intake. Funny thing here...it was cold as hel#. I didnt drink near enough in my opinion, but I guess it was enough. Probably equivalent to 4 bottles of H2O, but was the watered down sports drink that they had out on the ride. I only ate at the rest stops. I remember having 1/2 peanut butter and honey sandwich at the first stop, probably 1/2 banana and some drink at the second, Georgia p-nuts and drink at the 3rd, and then a hotdog and Ibuprofin shortly after that. Last stop was GA p-nuts and drink again. The hotdog stayed down and for some reason really helped me. I think my tank was really low at that point. Oh yeah...somewhere at about the 1/3 mark I had one of those sports syrups. That helped a bunch too. I had a whole pocket full of beans, syrups, gels etc, but didnt use them. It would be a whole lot different if it was warmer...
