Hey, so my dad is a pretty big dude, like 280 and 6'4, and I'm trying to find him a road bike. He's been pretty sedentary for a while, so I'm looking for something pretty comfortable. Ideally I want to find something like a mid 90's steel lemond with some 32-36 spoke wheels. Basically what I'm wondering is what kind of stuff should I look for for a guy that big? I mean bars, stem, tires, etc. I have no idea how a lightweight alu stem and bars would hold up to all that power! Does this sound like a good idea? Should I go in a completely different direction with this?
Thanks,
John

High spoke count wheels, for one thing. 36 spoke would be fine, or a touring wheel set with 40 on the rear.

Other than that, the right size frame. You might also look at a touring frame, for the simple reason that it's tough as nails, and comfortable.

Look at 58-60 CM Framesets. I'm not sure where in Wisconsin you are, but here's a possible, more of a commuter, with upright stance located in Milwaukee.

you could always get him a salsa or surly cyclocross bike.

like a road bike, but can handle the abuse of a heavier rider.

Ok, I found a bike on CL. Its an older leader with 9 speed campy centaur. The only problems are the wheels. Front is a bontrager race lite, and the rear is a richey aero ocr. Bars, post, and stem are all bontrager race lite.

Would a nine speed campy cassette fit on a campy 10 speed rear wheel?
