Bicycle Mechanics - How do you determine fork length for 1" steerer diameter?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I am in the process of bidding on an Italian frameset that comes with a 1" matching threadless fork. I prefer the look of a quill stem on a steel bike so I would like to install a 1" threaded fork instead.
How do Idetermine what length fork I need (it would be for a 61 cm Viner)?
Thanks for any help

I imagine it's hard to get a threaded fork to match your headtube + stack length of steerer tube exactly? Your LBS may have to cut the steerer tube?
Tange sells a couple of forks that could work. So does Surly.
Only two problems: super-long steerer tubes are hard to find, and all of the new ones for sale are cheapish and heavy.
Search for "fork" under cycling on Ebay and you will see tons of options.

Threaded forks used to come in a range of steerer lengths and you chose the closest one and either cut off the excess length or used some spacers under the locknut.
One reason for the almost complete take-over of threadless steerers/headsets was that they simplified manufacturer's inventory. Forks were all made with one extra long steerer length and cut to fit.
