I just traded an unused fish tank to my neighbor for this bike it has a three speed internal geared hub. I cannot find any more like it on the internet and I was wondering if the hub gearing is original for the bike? Also I was wondering where to get a NOS shifter for it? Thanks for the help.

1981 catalog page here: http://www.trfindley.com/flschwinn_1980_1990/1981_14.html

The 3-speed rear hub was one of the options listed.

For a new trigger, you can try eBay, where they come up frequently or buy one new from Bikeman.com: http://www.bikemannetwork.com/biking/p/LD2205

The Schwinn catalog says the hub would be a Shimano. The trigger from Bikeman is for a different hub, a Sturmey-Archer. I don't think they're compatible. I see lots of bikes on Craigslist & the like that have Shimano 3-speeds. Could get a beat-up old bike for a few bucks as a donor. Not sure whether the shift linkages are the same through the years. Sorry can't offer more info.

I have a 81 (I think) Ladies world tourist with a sturmey archer 3 speed coaster. It's made by giant and is a great bike. it has very long chainstays which makes it perfect for towing the trailer. here's a crappy pic.

Thanks for all the help. I looked at the sturmy archer shifters but I can see from g-funks' picture that the shifter linkage on the hub is on the opposite side and so I think the shifter for that hub may not work with my shimano unit.

the cable and indicator chain goes in the non-drive side of your hub? that's something new to me. basically sturmey archer hub=sturmey archer shifter shimano hub=shimano shifter

Somebody must have put the hub in the wrong direction. It certainly wouldn't work that way.
