Darn.....Just now seeing this. I'd love to be joining you tomorrow. Can't make it though. Ran last trail run of the winter series in Rockford today.....had a blast there this winter but am totally trashed. It was a half marathon on trails...covered still in ice and mud. Feel like I've run a full mary. Plus my parents are arriving in the late morning.

Have a great ride. I really have to actually get out on my bike.....soon! Or I'm going to be dying in New Glarus.:p

i plan on wearing a long sleeve baselayer with a windproof jacket and windproof bibtights. should i wear a balaclava or just a winter hat? i don't want to be too hot but i also don't want to have to stuff my jacket pockets with extras...

I always bring too much and then decide in the parking lot. I hate being too hot and/or carrying too much gear so I error on the side of coldness.

After looking at the weather I am pretty sure I will have the following:

Bottom:
Wool Socks
Toe cover/or booties depending
Bibs
Windproof lined tights

Top:
L/S Base layer
Themal- winter jersey
Either vest or windproof jacket
Long fingered gloves
Beanie

Backup/along with me:
Balaclava
Short Fingered Gloves <-- in saddle bag.

Don't forget your cameras guys.

Look for the 6'2' 250 pound guy on a Pinarello in a red Nike jacket. Then you've found us (me).

Ride report:

BRRRRRR! This was my first real ride in this kind of weather and my first outdoor ride of 2008. I knew the route well because I ride a portion of it pretty much 3-4 times a week during the year. It felt good to finally ride outdoors.

It was nice to meet some new BFNIC peoples, sorry that I had to jet on the 16-mile loop. I think the weather limited conversation a bit.

Ride stats:
2:57 moving time
45.42 miles (i rode to/from the high school from my house)
15.4 mph avg. speed
30-33 degrees

It was cold. I'm not in as good of shape as I had thought. I was OK holding on to nietsmas's wheel for most of the first loop. I never felt strong enough to really take a pull though. Voldemort got a flat at the end of the first loop. He was behind us and I never heard anything.

The wait for him to get in got long because he had some CO2 failures. Made starting up the second loop a little harder. More climbing/mile on the second loop it seemed. I'll be able to tell when I upload.

Good times. I'll post photos later.

Stats:
Ride Time: 2:22:42
37.32 Miles
15.7 Avg
1382 ft - Flat basically. :(

i did 45 miles, but it's not really that hilly from my house to wauconda. i totaled 2,136 ft after turning on MB's elevation correction. not a huge deal, but i'd be curious to see what your MB event shows...

It was freakin cold thats for sure.

Yet again I failed to live up to my own expectations and made the group slow down for me far too often. I apologize to the group for slowing you guys down. I guess I better start taking this a little more seriously if I want to have any chance in New Glarus. Maybe My wife and I will just ride the trail up there and leave you guys off to the hillls. I was amazed how poorly I handled those little rollers. I was gassed after only 20 miles and let the boys go off the final 16 without me. I had slowed them down enough thats for sure. Average heart rate for me over the 21.35 miles I rode was 161 BPM and averaged 15.3 mph. Gonna have to get on the bike more often and work on that. At least I wasnt too cold and now know that my clothing is adequate for this weather so now maybe I can start commuting to work a few days a week.

Great group of guys as usual and got to meet a few others while waiting for the others to finish round 2. I learned a lot today and hope to put it to use soon so I dont die in NG.

Huh...I haven't used MB mainly because it just seems like a hassle. When I download into TC I get 1243 in ascent. I guess I rode a different route....;)

Miles- 37.17
Elevation-too much too soon
Time-lost to a flat. 20 minutes, what with needing to borrow a pump
Temperature-2FC (no, not fahrenheit /celsius, too F'in Cold
In WWII on the Russian front, the freezing German soldiers would try and warm their feet by a fire, and would pull their feet out of their boots only to find their toes had remained frozen inside the boot. I was afraid that might happen to my fingers. Other than that, a good time was had by all. In July, we'll all be complaining about it being too darn hot.:p

After working out on the trainer at leaast three-four times per...uh,winter, I guess I'm pretty happy that I rode the whole route.:)

BTW, who was it that knew somebody who painted frames? Not for me, but last night a friend of mine asked if I knew anyone. He's not looking for a fancy custom paint job. He just has an older nicked up bike that he wants to get painted. Anyone have a name phoine or e-mail, know anything about cost? Thanks!
