Great Lakes - Sunday Ride

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Even without a melt the roads are clear. It's the trails that still suck.

This may be do-able. I noticed the weather gets colder again over the weekend tho. I really dont have much in the way of cold weather riding clothes. I'm thinking seriously about this....

I'm carpooling with another rider. We plan on starting around 9:00.

I'm there...probably...I think. (I like to SKI in the cold, I like to ride in the not so f'in cold).

Yes 36 miles.
If it doesn't rain I would be in for this ride.

neitsmas and JT1 just need to promise not to destroy us in the first 2 miles. If they do I will officially lead the "B" group....you know.....so that I can help out if there is a flat....;)

Hmmm, I think the guy I'm riding with is a stronger rider than me.
I haven't been on my road bike since last year, however I have been taking 3 to 4 spin classes a week for the last couple of months.
My goal this year is to really push myself to keep up with the stronger riders.
I don't think I will be dropping anyone in the first 2 miles, it will take me at least 5 miles to warm up. :)

i doubt i'll be riding hard. after riding the revmaster consistently for december and january, february was spotty and i've ridden once in march. i've come down with a cold and the dr. gave me a z-pack (or whatever they are called), so if my cough is gone by sunday, i'll be riding, just not fast.
Psimet2001

You'll be right as rain in a day or so. Z-Pack is good stuff. Probably didn't need it because you most likely have the flu virus that's going around big time, but still....it'll make you feellike a champ.

Alright. Weather looks good for the ride. $10 day or ride registration. Route opens at 8. Technically we could do this route twice before it closes at 1...if someone was interested.
I saw JT1 hs a 9am meet up planned. Is tha still the plan or could we start earlier (with the possibility of some of us being able to ride a section of the route again?).
Depending on who shows I can see this going a lot of different ways. I'll go with the flow and adjust accordingly. I'm just kind of amped that I'll actually be outside....riding....with other people.....again....

I'm carpooling with a rider and meeting another there, so I'm locked in to a 9am start time. Anyone is welcome to join in, however with the other riders being stronger riders than me, once warmed up I think we will be clipping along at a pretty good pace.

I'm more of a 9:00 kind of guy. And I'm in no shape to try a double, either. The mind is willing, but the body is weak.:o I'd also be interested in a carpool. I could come north from St. Charles to meet up with any Elgin are people. Meet at Village Pedaler...around 8:00? Psimet, Kimbercop, Nietsmas? I have a "hang it on the back bikerack that can hold up to four (only done it with 2 hybrids and 2 mountain bikes, but I can't imagine four road bikes being an issue). Any takers? Or we can just meet there and decide who rides with who once we get to V.P.

I'm good to meet at Psimet's at whatever time. I'm hoping the weather stays true.
"More sun than clouds. Highs in the low 40s and lows in the low 30s"
I just need to get some clothing together. Having never really rode in cold weather do you think shorts and leg warmers are ok or will I need more. I have a new Nike goretex jacket I'm hoping to wear with maybe a long underwear (under armour cold gear) under it. Ski gloves and a head mask. I dont get cold easily but Im unsure. I dont want to be too bulky, (my body does that by itself already). Thoughts??

Since my tights didn't arrive (F' PBike!) I rode in the 33 --> 38 degrees this week in the following fred gear:
Bibs + S/S Jersey
Pajama Pants over bibs (yes, honestly)
A Joe Rocket windproof liner that functions very similarly to a cycling jacket
Silk Glove Liners/Summer crochet gloves
Euro cap under helmet.
Toe warmers.
I felt mighty fine I must say. Wetness would really be bad on the PJs however.
Also, low 40s should never be considered 'cold weather' in these parts.
Some of what you're talking about wearing would probably make me way to hot at 40+ degrees.
Psimet2001
03-13-08, 08:13 PM
Shorts and leg warmers would most likely be cold. I like to wear bibs with running tights over them (cheap ones from Galyans - errr...Dicks) when it hits 40 degrees. Getting close to freezing I wear Performance Triflex tights. They are on sale right now FWIW.
Up top - in the 40s I wear a base ss jersey with arm warmers and a vest. In the 30's I wear a long sleeved base layer (UA Cold Gear would be great for you), a long sleeved jersey (insulation here and only here) and then a wind layer. Vest if warmer, windbreaker if colder. In the 20s and teens I put on a commuter windproof jacket and balaclava.
Head is either a cycling cap, beanie, or balaclava in that order as the temp goes down.
Gloves are either normal or long fingered.
You want to dress to be a little cold at the start. The first mile or two should have you thinking about going back to the car to get more layers. If you are warm at the start you will be swimming in sweat a few miles in. Then when you stop you will freeze within a minute or two.
Even when I ride in the teens I end up coated in sweat.
If you don't have a long sleeved jersey then maybe a long sleeved cotton shirt over a base layer and then something that blocks the wind. Wind breaker like. Tiny bit of insulation is OK if you are only able to get together a long sleeved cotton shirt.
32-40 is bad temp range to ride in. Too cold to wear 1st layer stuff. Too warm to wear the heavy stuff.
On my feet I wear wool socks. for this range I would most likely wear toe warmers. Colder and it's bootie time.
Also FWIW - everyone will be having a winter gear sale if you are interesting in picking up something even for next season. The time to buy winter gear is in the spring and the time to buy summer gear is in the fall.

To avoid an untimely death, I need to get back to St. Charles by 1:30, so probably back to Psimet's by 12:45 to give a tiny margin for error. Is that do-able if we leave your place by 8:00 and start riding by 9:00? How long from your house to Wauconda HS start point? Mapquest claims it's 40 minutes from your place. OR... Should I just drive up there and meet you guys there?

It can be done in that timeframe. That's averaging like what....12 mph including stop - if we take one. We should be good even if someone has a mechanical.
If it's life or death (for your marriage that is) then you might be better off just meeting us up there.

I have a party to be at around 2PM so I cant lolligag either, but I figured on the bike by 0915, 2 1/2 hour ride time (max) and travel time back. 12mph sounds about right for me, I'll see if I can crank it up a little past that for you guys. I'll probably need a quick stop to stretch a little, let my heart rate get out of the 300's for a few minutes then we can hit it again. 1st real ride of the year dont ya know.
I think you should be fine riding up there with us. I'll get you a get out of jail free card in case your cutting it close on time heading home ;)
Think I got the clothing figured out. I'll feel like the sta-puff marshmellow man, but I shouldnt be too cold.
Well I took the road bike out for ride yesterday to make sure everything worked well, it was so nice out I went for about 20 miles. Then at the gym while changing clothes I popped my lower back out. I could barley stand let alone put my shoes back on. I shuffled like a crippled old man to my chiropractor, it was so tight he could barley move it.
When I woke up today I could barely get out of bed. Sitting is fine, but standing is painful. After a vicoden, and moving around I felt a bit looser. Since sitting was a relief from pain, what would a riding position feel like? I determined that a riding position actually felt good :). So I went for a short ride, and the back feels better. Still hurts to stand or put on my shoes.
I have another chiropractor appointment tomorrow. So I am hoping if can get me to stand, I will be able to ride.

Hardcore, man, hardcore. Throw out your back, can hardly walk, you get back on the bike and then start planning for a 36 mile jaunt. I LOVE IT:D
(just make sure you don't do any serious damage, though. It isn't worth it. It's not like it's going to be 70 degrees out:rolleyes:

I'm trying to think of my pre-ride excuses but I'm sure everyone has heard them before. I guess I'll just have to tough it out. Looking at the ride facts on the website, it says a 16, 20 or 36 mile route. Is it safe to assume that the 36 is the 20 and 16 put together?? If so, maybe we need to start on the 20 in case I'm too outta shape to handle all 36, at least at Psimets pace.

Speaking of psimet's pace....:D I went for a ride today. I haven't really felt normal on the bike yet this year (outside that is). I've been riding my new cross bike. Last weighed it in a 25ish pound loaded with rack, fenders, lights, etc. That and I'm still riding the cross tires - al 32mm knobbie wonders that they are. I kept thinking....oh that's why I am sucking and not putting up any decent numbers.
Then today I went out and felt good. I mean really good. Insanely good. I cracked out about 20 miles because that's all I could get in before sunset. I'm looking forward to getting some saddle time on my road bike....
:D;)
JT1 - I have some serious back issues. Cycling can aggravate it if you're not careful, but I actually got into cycling because of my back (recommendation of the doc at the time). I had a flareup this year about 2 months ago. I now do a lot of yoga/stretching to help alleviate it. Stay out of the drops if you can.

It may be a last minute thing now. I have to work tonight. After getting home and unwinding, it's about 1am. Since I sleep about nine hours a day, this might be a problem. I'll try to make it. If not, I'll see everyone for the Spring Forward at Union.
I went to the chiropractor again today, he adjusted my back and said I'm good to go for tomorrows ride :).
The riding should not be a problem, however I might need help getting my shoes on!
