wowsers.... how often do you clean/lube your chain?
and how do you tell when your chain needs replacing (do you go by chain stretch?)

Only 1,000 miles! So you probably change your chain more frequently than your tires. No way! I have 2,500 on mine and it still doesn't need to be replaced. And how often do you clean and lube your chain. Mine gets the treatment almost weekly.

They last untill they wear out.
It all depends...masher, hills, poor maintenence = not long

actual mileage is about 1200miles but not that big a difference...maintenance is pretty good...at least weekly to every 10 days and usually after every really wet ride. i ride 5-6 days per week
