Found a guy selling a '90 Trek 330 in great shape for $50. Figured with replace the tire/wheel combo and I Have a cheap road bike until I can get in a bit better shape and determine my "biking path".
Good shape bike - $50 for this alright? I'll of course look the frame over.

I think it's be all right. For $50.00, you really can't lose a lot. ;)

Unless the frame is tweaked, I would go for it, even if you need to spend a couple of hundred bucks, to get it road worthy, your still ahead of the game...... Check the frame for cracks, dents or creases (usually cracked or broken paint) and rust (bubbling paint), and if none are present, have a look and make sure the frame appears square, one way to tell is to remove the wheel, and set the frame flat, if one side sticks up a little, or you can rock it, the frame is bent, same goes for the fork.
As for the wheels, I would get them trued and tensioned, and leave them be, the only exception, is if the rims are chromed steel. Chromed steel rims, are dangerous when wet, but I think those went out in the early 1980's.

Yeah, starts out with $50!:D I bought an 84 Bianchi from a friend. He was asking $40, I gave him $80 that I had in my pocket cause I knew it was a goodie. It fit my wife, that's why I bought it. She loved it! Wouldn't touch the new Bianchi I bought for $700.
Started out with $80, but ended up putting about $500 more into it. But it was worth it. She rode it for 6 or 7 years. Now has a new carbon fiber bike but still won't ditch the 84!:D
Go for it, may end being a gem! My wife's is!

I wish I could find a bike for $50, and then I could build it up slowly. If it would fit, I would buy it and then have fun building it up!!!
Good luck and have fun.

Picked it up this AM. Outstanding condition. Turns out it was an '89. NO rust, no cracks or paint bubbling that I can see. Tires are in great shape. Just pumped 'em up and I'm heading out for a ride shortly! I'm ecstatic!
Looks like a really good deal enjoy

Dude, I'll give ya $60 for it. (nice find)
Very nice find. I have a 87 Trek 330 found at a local thrift store that I put back together. I would recommend you pull the cranks, bottom bracket, and wheels and replace and regrease all bearings. Loose ball bearings are cheap. A set of new cables, tires and tubes and you should be in good shape.
