I hope this is the right thread to post in, this forum is enormous. I know this post got kinda long but i really wanted to give as much information as i could before asking for help!!

In college I rode a lot in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, lots of steep climbs and steep drops followed by miles of single track. I would ride a few times a week sometimes for 6 hours on a Saturday, sometimes for 20 minutes on a Tuesday afternoon :). this lasted all of college, I was in great shape, and was even asked to race on a local team, then something unfortunate happened... ...I graduated and got off my bike . I took my 2000 fisher sugar 3, hung it in my garage, and went to work in my car.

Here I am 4 years later wanting for those days when I was in great shape and loved being on a bike. I unfortunately do not live 10 minutes from a mountain trail anymore but I AM surrounded by road shoulders, bike trails and parks with cross country circuits in them. My fisher could use a tune up but is still in great shape; however having the full suspension is a deterrent with so much concrete around me.

I am interested in getting a new bike (and by new I mean new to me) but I am a little torn about what to get. my first thought was to start looking for a mid 90s rigid frame mountain bike that I could put a smoother tire on, then I thought road bike, then back to mountain bike again, then I was thinking about an old steelie road bike...

I really want to ride for recreation. Just to get out and exercise my legs, and get my heart going. I ride a stationary at the gym but it is not the same. I have even thought about the idea of, when I am ready, riding to work a few days a week. I am interested in any and all help as I do not really know where to start. I have money available to spend on a bike that could be a good deal but am not looking to spend a ton since I am a public school teacher with a mortgage.

Here are my vitals:
I am a male, 6 foot 1 and about 195 lbs, I have about a 33 inch inseam, and live in the Washington DC metro area, although I am on the outskirts. I use the DC Craigs list (http://washingtondc.craigslist.org) and have had good luck using it in the past for other things including my car.

Thanks in advance for all of your help

Liam

EDIT:
I thought about going to check this out and see if it was worth using as a project bike. I have been in contact with the owner:

Specialized Hard Rock Mt Bike - $50
Bike has served me well but needs a new home.
Cromoly frame (Large, I think 22") is in perfect shape.
Both tires are new, seat is new.
Toeclips on pedals.
Outer sproket on crankset is bent (didn't quite beat a log) but bike is still rideable using lower gear settings.
