Not sure if this is the right place for this question, but here goes.

I'm converting and old Tange steel frame to a fixed gear. Just had the frame beadblasted in preparation for a new paint job. I have a guy lined up to paint the frame, but he wants to use AwlGrip paint that's a polyester urethane made for yacht finishes. Is this a good idea? How will this type of paint hold up?

Thanks,

Ty

That is a great idea, subject to what he is priming it with. Awlgrip is used on boats, that's what I put on my Trimaran, but it is the kind of paint first developed for stuff like cars. It's a Linear Poly that has very high resistance to UV, and adequate toughness (you can key a car easily enough, but the finish lasts out in the sun far better than an epoxy). Very dangerous paint to spray, if one doesn't take care. But I guess that isn't your problem. Others should google isocyanates deaths.

ANY paint designed to hold up on a boat will give a powdercoat a run for it's money, and just blow most paintjobs away.

thats for DURABILITY, and chip resistance,....there might be limited colors, and depending on how it's layered, touch ups or spot repairs (should it get damaged later on) might be difficult, or impossible.

I'd do it

post pix when it's done, I'd like to see how it came out
