Any alt. country/Americana fans? What good stuff have you heard lately?

For me, I'm liking Ryan Bingham's Mescalito. First time I heard it I wasn't into it, but subsequent listens lived up to the hype it's been receiving.

So, as we mourn the demise of No Depression.........

As a recovering country music fan, I've gotta agree. Once an artist appears on CMT, you know his days of making alt.country music are over (by definition, I guess). Not to say that there isn't good stuff on CMT once in a while, since they do still step further away from pop than most country music radio stations.

As for the Bottle Rockets, they're definitely the second-best alt.country group to come out of the St Louis area.

Good place for me to ask this...

I am a big fan of Junior Brown.

What other artists would others recommend?

I will be checking out radiofreetexas.org

What do you like about Junior Brown? Asleep at the Wheel seems like the most logical recommendation, but my own personal tastes don't fall in that area.

You're best bet is to preview other albums using the "Listeners Also Bought..." recommendations on iTunes or Amazon.com. I'm a big fan of Amazon.com's new MP3 downloads section because of its various ways of recommending artists based on stuff I like, and I can preview all songs on an album with just the click of a button. I discover most of my music that way.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot.

I probably would have never heard of Junior Brown if my son's hadn't been listening.

I don't know where you draw the lines for Alt Country, but lately I can't get enough of The Mountain (Steve Earl and the Del McCoury band 1999).

Dale Watson's Live in London is also in pretty heavy rotation on my ipod right now.

I'd say Steve Earle falls right into the Alt Country category, and I'm a fan of his stuff. I haven't heard The Mountain, though. Sounds like one I'll need to check out.

Oh, and for the fans of Texas Singer/Songwriters, check out Sam Baker if you haven't already. Kind of an odd style, partly due to him being injured in a bomb blast, but his writing skills are great.

It's Steve Earle doing bluegrass, definitely not his usual fare but, as I said, one of my favorites.

I like quite a few 'alt.country' bands/artists. Unfortunately I've been in a bit of a music rut and haven't listened to much new music lately. The newest alt.country album I have loved was Lucinda Williams' West, and that came out some time ago.

As far as artists/bands that have been around a while, I really like Whiskeytown, Band of Horses, Gillain Welch,, Dwight Yoakam, Junior Brown, Kathleen Edwards, BrightBlackMorningLight (ala.cali.tucky), Phosphorescent, Lucinda Williams!, My Morning Jacket (tennessee fire and at dawn), Neko Case, Old Crow Medicine Show...etc.

Just curious, but did it take you awhile to warm up to West? I like Lucinda Williams, and Car Wheels on a Gravel Road is one of the greatest albums of all time, but I haven't been able to get into West. Seems like most of the songs are just the same line being repeated over and over again. The songwriting is nowhere near as interesting as her previous albums.

I don't know. Maybe it's just me.

It did take me quite a while to warm up to West. While I loved "Come On" from the start, it took a good 6-7 months from its release in February before I grew to love the whole album.

I don't think it's just you. I understand where you are coming from completely. I think the repetitive nature of some of the songs is what turned me off about it. I do think that it is an album worth listening to again.
I have to be in the right mood to listen to it in its entirety, but when I am in the mood to do so I really, really enjoy it.

I saw Joe Ely and Alejandro Escovedo last night, both of them on stage with Bruce Springsteen. That was a nice surprise.

There was hippie country in the 70's that fits--listen to some things by th eFlying Burrito Bros, also Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen. Look for Cody's "Hot Licks, Cold Steel............" album.
