Southern California - Why do Trek special orders take so long?

The trek store where I live didn't have the bike I wanted in my size so they had to special order it for me.

I ordered it on thursday 3/6 and they said it should be here by a week after friday on 3/14.

He said the warehouse had it in stock somewhere in southern california (I don't remember what city)

So if I'm in southern california and the bike is in southern california, why take a week to get? I'm maybe 2-3 hours from the warehouse.

If the bike is in the warehouse, slap a label on it and UPS it over. UPS can deliver within socal next day for ground. (I'm assuming the wareshouse has it boxed already)



One week would make sense to me if it was coming out of Portland, OR. I could just be impatient?

i waited about 7 days to get mine from Utah? I bought specialized though. They may be tacking on a few days because they need to build it up? Also, sometimes cheaper shipping just takes longer.

wouldn't they just put it together at the store?


within southern california, the cheapest shipping (ups/fed ex ground) should only take a day after pickup.

ya, i was saying maybe the store was tacking on an extra day or so to build it up? Also, I remember FedEx hanging onto one of my shipments for an extra day or two before delivery even though it was super close, it just sat in their warehouse.

Bingo! When I worked in a shop, the standard answer was 1 week to make sure we didn't find ourselves scrambling to assemble it on a busy day. Bikes were rarely assembled on Sat and Sun since labor hours were needed elsewhere.

It depends on the shipping arraignment/contract. If say, UPS gets 7 days to make the delivery and it's a bulky item, as long as it gets delivered before or on that date, that's all that matters. Besides, after pickup it "may" go through several warehouses/main sites before it gets to the one servicing/delivering in your area...and that could take a few days.

Maybe it's not Trek. Could be the shop stalling for time if they are busy. "umm, errrr, yeah, the bike hasn't arrived yet, Uhh, yeah, that's the ticket!".:D

When Trek contacted the LBS about my replacement frame, the frame arrrived 2 or 3 days later.

When I bought my LeMond, ALL the stores of the chain where I bought it were out but Trek showed 1 of them in their SoCal warehouse. The shop told me I'd have it next day, but then turned around and sent a van out to get it that same day as soon as I paid for the bike.

I paid at 11ish, and was home with bike in-hand around 4ish.

I could just be impatient?your assuming that they are sitting around in the warehouse waiting to ship you a bike. once it's actually on the truck is the easy part, and i would guess that portland would only add a day. the shop calls/sends the info to trek hq, who then sends it to the warehouse where it goes on their pile of stuff to do when the other stuff is done they'll put your bike on a truck. each one of those steps can easily take a day or two which quickly adds up to a week.

Should have been next work day. I ordered a Lemond bike for a client out of the socal warehouse and it arrived today. (They shipped it last night) This however is with new instore ordering. I am in charge of my stores ordering for special orders. The shop you have may be forced into a system much like mine used to be. We used to have to wait for someone in the office to order it, then it was shipped, then it arrived at our warehouse, then the next day that our truck was running that it would get to my store. Needless to say it wasnt the most efficient on special orders. Please be patient with them, sometimes its not there fault. However there is still a chance it wasnt ordered yet. The shop gets tracking numbers from Trek's shipping and ordering system. Ask them for it. That might get the fire under the butt.

Also it may have had to come from the Wisc warehouse as well, if the bike was allocated to another dealer. If thats the case add a week. Good luck to you and I hope you enjoy your new bike. :D

Took about a week and a half to take possession of my Bianchi special order (I imagine it would have been the same had I ordered a Trek). The funny thing is that it had been sitting in my LBS showroom for 2 days, as no one took the initiative to call me up. You should go down to the bike shop and see what the deal is.
