General Cycling Discussion - Bugs Bunny......SPLAT (almost)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi all,
Was out on our local bike trail, The River's Edge Trail ( http://www.thetrail.org ).
The trail was pretty much empty I guess due to the winds. I figured I could open'r up a little.
So, I was cranking along with the wind down in the drops doing about 28 MPH (long open straight stretch)when all of a sudden I see something dart out in front of me! There was no time to react, which turns out to be a good thing! The critter, a furry little bunny rabbit, split my wheels, hit my one peddle on the up stroke and tumbled to the other side of the trail! I won't repeat my utterance here, but needless to say I was quite shocked! There was even a little patch of fur on the peddle.. poor little guy...
I finished my ride and changed my shorts.. :D
I don't get it. So the bunny is alive or dead?

Well, I think he survived, just a missing a small patch of fur.
I guess this was not that interesting of a story.. Sorry about that. :(

I enjoyed it!
I've had critters dart out in front of me - but not as close as you had. For a split second your heart is in your throat. It’s this mini adrenalin rush. It’s exciting if it turns out OK.

AMEN!
Thanks Mike.
I never said I didn't like it. I was just concerned about the bunny ;) . To me the F--ing squirrels are the worst. One word for them.... DUMB..... Thery run in to the middle of trail/road and sit and wait until you come, and then decide to go in some unpredictable direction.

You got cable TV, the squirrels and rabbits have people on bikes to mess with. Imagine the rabbits sitting together in the bushes just waiting for you. I can just hear them. "I dare you fuzzy! Jump out in front of this guy. He'll have a coronary!" Now that's entertainment! :D

The squirrel that chased you... did he bark by any chance...... could have been a Jack Russel Terrier

I was chased by a squirrel this summer as well. The little bugger was to my left on a fairly busy street near the end of my commute. He kept up with me for about 500 yards at 19mph, until a car came up behind us and he tore off to the left side of the road and into a park. A couple of years ago I was nearly taken out by a deer running across the road. It was a young buck who came out of the woods about 6 feet in front of me just before dusk. If he had stopped, or even slowed down as he crossed the road, I would have been a stain on the asphalt. Gotta watch out for them critters around here.

I got chased by a bulldog on a series of winding trails. Everytime I thought I had lost the damn thing it would appear out of no where because it wasn't limited by the trails. What made matters worse is there's a part of the trail where its an uphill rock face, slow without the rocks, with the rocks its faster to run (at least when you suck like I do) anyways I ended up sprinting up the hill with my bike on my shoulders with a barking dog on my ass. Cyclocross ain't got nuthin on me!

No cable TV here. My wife says I channel surf to much with the 3 channels we get now... :)
Thanks to everyone sharing their stories. Very entertaining reading! :D
I don't feel so bad about my ride last Saturday then. I had to ride because I could not endure the pain of seeing the springboks lose to En*la*d in the rugby world cup. For 3 hours I bopped around here and there in the local forest. A deer jumped out of the bushes and darn well nearly popped my heart. Later, I chanced upon a convention of squirrels who were frantically gathering nuts for the winter. The pickings were ripe and I could not count them all. It was safer to ride away, but I had 3 or 4 them who tailed alongside for a while. Cute little buggers made me laugh no end.
They made me realise that having chosen not to watch the rugby, that I came out of it having had a much better afternoon instead.
