Mountain Biking - Looking to purchase singlespeed

Hi. My wife and I are really into fitness and looking for an alternative way to excercise. Since we both enjoy biking , I suggested that we look into a local mtb track that would be easily accessable to us. Although there is one probelm though.......we currently do not own mountain bikes, so I am currently in the market for two....preferable singlespeed. Can anyone suggest a good entry level bike? My budget would be up to $1,000 for both.

why singlespeed?

From what I have read about singlespeed, and the track we would be riding (Bonne Carre Spillway in LA), singlespeed seeme like the right way to go; but my knowledge level is amatuer, so I am certainly open for suggestions.

A pal of mine has a redline monocog. Great bikes. I would highly recommend for a starter bike.

I think they only sell the new ones as 29ers but the 26" ones can be had for $300 - $400.

As beginners, I probably wouldn't recommend a Single Speed. Unless your "track" is mostly flat. Don't get me wrong, SS are a lot of fun, but for a beginner, I'd recommend an entry level bike.

Something in the $350 to $450 range. That'll get you two bikes, plus some gear!

I spoke to a guy at my LBS, and he suggested the same thing....specifically a Specialized Rockhopper.
